Im looking to buy a new addition and a 2 and a half year old uncut colt has caught my eye, he currently is turned out in a mixed herd and doesnt show any interest in mares. Is it worth getting him gelded if hes gone this long with them still and how much does if currently cost to have them gelded?

It's 100% worth getting him gelded if you want him. Prices vary. Last quote I had was £350.
If he's in a mixed herd not showing any interest then either the mares are already pregnant or they have clobbered him and frightened him off, or both.

My 20 month old was £750 in the end as he sucked one back up after sedation despite both being descended since he was about 8 months lol - I decided to have to done there and then anyway so it was a bit more involved. I was at the clinic anyway as don't have a good space for it at home and he was a bit too big to be a field job by then. He was a good boy in character, but my geldings were getting bored of him and I wanted to bring the whole herd back together. He was nicely grown by then, so the timing seemed good. He's now rising 7 and has been a wonderful playful friendly herd member. I would normally do it earlier but he was a bit sickly as a foal so I played it safe. There is absolutely no point in keeping them entire unless they are part of a GOOD breeding programme.

You wont know If he's been interested in the mares til next year ! Definitely geld asap if you buy
Anything from £300 for straightforward, complications extra 😮

Jesus- this is why there are so many BOGOFS around 😬

He would absolutely need to be gelded, and at that age it's a more risky procedure so set aside 1k in case of basic complications, or 3k in case of bigger complications.

I really don't get these people just chuck an entire 2 yo out with mares because his not really interested in mares.

They probably only clap eyes on him for a short while each day so God knows what his doing the rest of the time.

I kept Arabi entire until he was 4 and he didn't really show much interest but I wouldn't have kept him in a mixed herd, he only went out with others once gelded so I really wouldn't risk it get him gelded.

I was going to say my colt is 18 months and displays no interest in mares. He did mount my big lad as I was riding and leading the other day, and tries to practice an awful lot according to my spy cameras 😂😳 if I didn’t have the cameras I wouldn’t think he’d ever tried!

£350 ish round here to get the job done! That’s an on the yard drop and snip with aftercare drugs.

Do you know yourself that he isn't showing any interest or is that what the current owner is telling you? I doubt very much he isn't showing 'any' interest.

In answering your question - the straight forward gelding I had done recently cost me £350 at the practice and had no complications afterwards. The other gelding I had done recently went very wrong, I stopped counting at £2500 but could probably estimate approx £2750 with all the antibiotics and after care (and I can't quantify the grey hairs and frown lines).

£450 very recently to do a 6yo stallion standing.

he had covered and it was a biggish job but due to circumstances standing was only option.

that incl a week of antibiotics and painkillers and recovery was thankfully textbook.

100% he is covering those mares when current owner not around, they are being stupid/naive and you 100% want him gelding.

£320 to castrate a 3yo at home including all medications and booster flu/tetanus. I’d already started his vaccinations before getting him done as I think it would’ve added quite a lot to the cost to do it without him having tet on board.

I've never once seen my neighbours bull show the slightest interest in his ladies, and yet every spring the field is full of calves!
The stallion I had on loan a couple of years, had been at a previous loan home, the loaner was disappointed and didn't expect much the following year as he'd never seen the pony cover anything (running out with a mare herd), turns out Jim was a bit shy, and only covered the mares overnight 😂
