How much do I offer?

I've been offered a papered and registered 4 year old chestnut Arab gelding, standing at about 15hh. Totally unhandled, just lived out in a field all his life. Never had a rug on, headcollar etc. The breeder is very ill and is giving up. Going to see him Saturday. I don't think the breeder expects much money for him due to him being left untouched all his life. What should I offer, if anything?

The breeder may not expect much but I think you should ofer some money. It seems morally reprehensible to take advantage of someone who is stuck and very ill and that is NOT how you come across. I suspect it will be pretty much meat money as you have a lot of work to do but I would just ask the breeder and before I went to see the horse to give you some guidance.

Thanks for reply guys! Obviously does depend on the quality of the gelding, I have only seen a poor quality photo of his face so far! Looking forward to seeing him and absolutely love a project :) especially seeing as he is an Arab! Will let you know how it goes!

I think £1000 is a lot for a totally unhandled 4 year old. Also, unless proven in show ring, endurance or other competition Arabs aren't particularly expensive to purchase - even a very well bred one with papers. Why not go and view him and, if you like him, ask the breeder what she would like for him? She may be very happy to have him go to a good home where she'll be able to keep in touch about his progress and not expect very much in the way of financial remuneration. If she doesn't want anything, I'd consider a payment of £500 and insist she take it or donate it to charity.

I paid £500 for my last arab, it was nearly 3, had been handled. To be honest, stuff just isn't selling. Lovely looking gelding on AL for £1300, same age but looks broken etc.

To give you an idea i bought a 15.2 anglo arab (looked more araby though) chesnut gelding 4yr old, just backed but badly so had major rearing and bucking issues for £550. He had very good lines on both sides though. I think in that region is a fair offer but do ask the owner first as they might even say lower than that tbh.

I'd go along and see what you think. If you like him ask her what she would like for him and see what she says. If I were you, depending on what I thought of the horse after I'd met it etc I'd probably offer around £500 :)
