I'm currently considering buying a "new" saddle for my pony, who is currently in a maxam.
I phoned up a 2nd hand tack shop, which has a medium/wide, 16 inch gp for £190. She mentioned the make, and i got the impression it was good, but can't for the life of me remember which one it was!

So, if it doesn't fit i have the intention of selling it on. However, that tackshop mostly sells slightly older saddles, and now has a no returns policy on saddles.
What are your experiences of selling/ buying similar saddles? How much do you think it might go for on ebay (south east)? Do you think i'll atleast break even?
Also, is "bartering" normal when buying them, i would like to get the price down a bit if possible. The shop has recently decided to close down so there is a sale. Could i use the fact that i can't return it to my advantage?
Btw it's leather.

Thanks

Depends massively on the leather and make, and also the condition.

Could vary from practically nothing to 1000's...

ETS : Possibly not thousands for a GP, but could be a lot!

If you know nothing about the saddle I wouldn't bother - you don't even know the brand/ saddler, Saddles have to be listed well on ebay with as much info as possible - I got a fab WH saddle of ebay for £100 which was in the end a little tight, our saddler traded it in as it was in such good nic and I got £300 off my new saddle - I won as it wasn't listed well. You are buying something off someone who knows and prob doesn't think it is worth much

Do you know what size you horse is ? Is there not a saddler in your area that sells 2nd hand saddles that can find one to fit??

outdated, outmoded, twisted trees, mis-aligned panels, hard stuffing i could go on....

the maxam is a not a bad saddle at all, don't jump out of the frying pan into the fire

Our local tack shop is fab, and sells off part ex saddles by the ton - I think on e bay too. When we had all our saddles stolen a few years ago, she sent me home 10 saddles to try - no deposit! If they didn't fit she just changed them for another. I would avoid a second hand tack shop that didn't let you try on and return if it didn't fit. I would also be wary of buying from e bay - two of my horses are in 17.5mw saddles, but their respective saddles only fit them - not both..

I paid £350 for an older, but great condition albion GP, £300 for a GFS? GP and £250 for a good english pony GP.

As someone said, the last resort to get rid of a saddle is to trade it in against a new one..

I've had lovely 17.5'' Ideal saddle advertised for months and I've only had 2 people ask for photos and it's as cheap as chips, been checked and reflocked by saddler, yet some folk will pay over the odds for older knackered looking saddles that I wouldn't even put on a horses back....can't get my head around this second hand saddle selling at all.

I tried several second hand saddles (of good makes mind) but they were shoddy looking things that had obviously had their day, and saddlers wanting over £400 per saddle....dream on!

Really don't get it
