I agree with kerilli, a friend of mine had her horse checked by a "back person" who assured her there was nothing wrong. Turned out the horse had a kissing spine.

I pay £15 for a check up and £20 if they need doing and she is great I can really feel a difference.

Spider gets done about twice a year and is usually fine and Dexter every 5weeks!

If only KS was that easy to diagnose.

Bear in mind that NOBODY apart from a vet is qualified or legally allowed to diagnose a problem in a horse.

I have a mctimony lady and she is fantastic its £35 plus £20 travel which is shared between who needs her on the yard - if she comes and doesnt do anything then we just pay her travel !!

My vet told me that no one other that a vet should go near your horses back unless there is a problem that the vet has diagnosed. She said that it often does more harm than good and has had to put right many problems that have been caused by back people. She said she would always reccomend a vet with extended knowledge on back problems and refused to reccomend anyone else to me.

I am not saying back people are bad, but that was just what my vet said.

A chiropractor wouldn't come and see my horse untill the vet had given them permission and my vet wouldn't give me permission! He said there is no way a horse chiropractor can do what he needs to do when you think of how a chiropractor treats a person.Horses are just to big!He says they cause more problems!

Any qualified person worth their salt will refuse to come out and see your horse until the vet has been informed.

So yes, you do need to speak to your vet first.

My back lady is a Mctimothy trained lady, I think they like to be referred by the vet, but she came for 6 monthy check ups on my old horse as she had a doggy back and I and my back-person didn't need a vet referral to tell be her pelvis was out again. I pay around £35, for an extremly good inspection and treatment. Obviously if she needed to come again it would be another £30. hope this helps..

ok, im still not sure as last time the vet was out to do vaccines i asked her about his back - i think it is sometimes sore but dont really know and would like an experts opinion just to make sure he isnt in any pain anywhere - she said -without even looking at him the best thing to do is to get a back person out as they are more knowledgeable in this area. so i took this as for a general check etci could get someone out without a vet referal???!!bit confused now!!
