How much do you pay for a standard bale of meadow haylage? Not the rye stuff that sparks them up!

Approx how long does it last you?

Any good alternatives for non heating forage?

Thanks!

Haven't bought any yet this year, so can't advise on prices. The obvious alternative forage to haylage is hay! But presumably there is some reason why you don't want to use it, for example, a horse with dust allergy. There are many forms of short chop forages commercially available, but they work out as a much more expensive way to feed than hay, haylage or even the expensive Horsehage!

I Pay £20 for a bale of haylage from the local farmer ( in Sussex)- it's fairly dry consistency- meadow grasses, it comes in a big bale but very slightly smaller than the huge 4ft tall bales of haylage.

one bale lasts 2 horses 1 week approx, they are in quite a lot.

I don't really rate hay/haylage replacers personally.

Just been looking into this for our area ST!! Email me if you want more info but where are you buying from at the moment? I have found a guy in Binfield who charges £7 for a small bale, £25 for a medium one and £40 for large - so £10 cheaper for the 200kg bale than our local feed supplier who I think you might be buying from?
Problem tho is if you are only feeding T on it.....this guy in Binfield does small bales for £7 which are apparently twice the size of the Marksway ones....friend has picked my up 3 of those today so will let you know how long my T takes to get through one.... We are going to buy from the guy on Ebay, as have hear a few good reports and his pices are very good, but again, its large bales or nothing and you have to buy 8 at a time I believe - and you'd struggle to get through a big bale quick enough I guess?

we pay £6 for small bales, i feed 2/3 sections a night and one bale lasts a week
in the winter this is fine as the haylage keeps, in the summer i share wit someone so the bales are used up faster

I've been feeding 2-3 wedges of haylage and 2 sections of hay also, and he's scoffing the majority of it.

Think our field is getting to the bare bones and he is getting hungrier. Just wondered if there were any alternativest to haylage that would be cheaper = it seems not. No problem!

If I give him adlib forage, he at least leaves his blooming straw bed alone!!

I use a bale a week, I could get a bigger bale but I know I just wont use it in time before it goes off. So false economy really.

Thanks for all the replies.

I pay £35 delivered & stacked for the big 300kg bales but it's the good rye/ timothy stuff so I expect the meadow haylage would be cheaper than that.
Like you I'm mixing hay & haylage at the moment as all mine are eating for england!!
