How much do you pay for your dog to be groomed?

And what breed is it?

I am having such a hard time finding a good groomer. I had a wonderful groomer (who also ended up being a tutor in College) who made Beastie look so well and he was so good with her. It cost £29 which many thought was steep but it was worth it as he was so good. Unfortunately Colin was killed in a car accident just before Christmas

I miss him so much, as a friend, a groomer and a tutor.

Beastie last got clipped last week (£22) and at first I was pleased with the clip, but the more I look the less I like it. She has been clearly clipped by two different people. Had to explain, but you can tell.

I don't know anyone who owns dogs that get clipped so don't know where to try next!

Our neighbours have two beastie dogs, and they cost £45 for the two of them to be clipped.

They look LOVELY after they have been done, v short except for 'skirt', beard and eyebrows.

I will try and find out where they are done, but likely to be Banbridge direction which isn't a lot of use to you.

I have an elderly bearded collie x and I pay £32. She does take ages though as she is long haired. Sometimes I do her myself but I just can't get her face right, It always comes out a bit pointy

She only goes about once every 3-4 months though so not to bad!

Nohing, cos I can groom myself

I groomed 2 long coated akitas today and charged £45 each, but to be honest they are the most I charge, because there is a good 2-2 and a half hours worth of back breaking work in each dog.
For Beastie I would charge the same as a westi £25, most of my cuts ar between £20-25 , unless they are long coated, shepherd or colli, then it between £30-£45

Where abouts are you? My OH's mum and sister grooms dogs and they are often so busy they turn work away so I they must be ok at it! PM me if you want a number or anything, they charge less than what anyone has quoted here and have not had any complaints. They are based in Lisburn btw.

Hi there

First, just wanted to express my condolences re Colin. I had heard of his passing thru the grooming forums - I didn't know him personally but had certainly known of him. We actually lost a few esteemed grooming professionals this year. I understand Colin had some following and was much loved.

The Pet Care Trust has just issued a survey of prices that are charged around the country. There is very much a difference in pricing depending on where you are located. What kind of dog is Beastie?

I'm a groomer in Edinburgh - and probably one of the more expensive ones in my city. The minimum charge for a wash and trim is on a yorkie and that's £27. I know, it probably sounds like highway robbery to some. However, by the time you add up the cost of the overheads (rent, rates, electricity, water charges, staff wages and so forth) I work it out that I need to charge a minimum of £27 per hour in order to earn about a fiver per hour for myself!!! So, having said that - depending very much on the breed, the charges vary. So if someone presents me with a Newfoundland and that normally takes me a solid three hours (and perhas a couple of visits later to the chiro..for me!) I require about £75 to make it worth the time! Some groomers can groom several dogs in a very short amount of time. Some groomers prefer to do one to one only - so they can only groom maybe 4-6 dogs a day - and therefore must charge a higher rate to cover the costs and make a living.

Oh, and to anyone who has been unhappy with their service or their groom, I'd encourage you to complain! It's important that if you're not happy that you tell the groomer and get it rectified! I had someone last week phone me up and ask if the dog was misbehaved his last visit (noooo, good as always). Then they asked if someone else groomed their dog (noooo, it was just me as usual). So they asked if I'd mind "fixing" his haircut because it didn't look as good as usual.

So I said please do bring him in, I'd be more than happy - and sure enough, the trim wasn't quite right - nothing major - just a few bits and pieces. As a professional, I take pride in my work and would far rather have someone give me the opportunity to right something that went wrong. And we all can have an "off" day. So they went away still happy and it taught me about maybe a certain type of finish (and reminded me to not be complacent).

I know, more information than you really wanted -- but pricing is something I'm very passionate about and have encouraged groomers all over the country to charge a professional fee for a professional job done. Sorry, you'll maybe hate me for it as some folk have started to raise their prices!

Henry's last haircut cost me £25. However in reality it cost me more like £75 - turns out they nicked him with the clippers where his boy parts once were, but as they didn't tell me I didn't know to stop him from licking it and the skin became irritated - cream, hibiscrub and a vets consultation fee anyone?

I think they must have known it had happened as Henry is a total wuss and screams when anything hurts even a little bit.

They were also meant to do his anal glands, but when I went to the vet I got her to check that too as he was still scooting his bottom along the floor, and she said they'd only done one of the glands!

We are going somewhere else next time!

Is it possible that maybe during the clipping of his ex-boy bits that that they didn't nick him - but that it was a little on the short side and he licked because it was itchy? Sometimes dogs will self mutilate (eg hotspots) when something itches. This often happens with dogs that don't get clipped often and just aren't used to the sensation. I've had some dogs that have come in for a Once-A-Year de-pelting, taken down with a 7F (3mm) and it ran around and scratched for two days. However, the skin on the scrotum is very thin and sensitive and if was clipped neat, it would have been a bit itchy for your Henry.

Also, re glands - some groomers just aren't that good at doing them. There's a debate whether this job should be a veterinary treatment or a grooming one. Some vets would prefer to do them over groomers, and some vets think groomers should do them. There's no law against groomers doing them...but some just aren't that good at it.

we have a bedlington terrier and she has just had her first clip and it was £30 which is really good as they are lovely people, horsey as well, and she comes back smelling beautiful! our cocker spaniel got clipped there too for the same amount.

I wonder if I know your groomer in Aberdeenshire? I know of a couple, but one is horsey in particular - if it's the one I'm thinking of she'll have trained the same place as me and roomed with me at Crufts two years ago (but do you think I can remember her name at this precise moment....nope!).

Anyway, that £30 is pretty reasonable, but I'd probably charge more for a beddie than a cocker - more work on a beddie as their coats are a nightmare in general. Cocker hair is generally fairly straightforward and cooperative. Bedlington hair...ugh - gives me nightmares.

Touch it with scissors and unless you have an extremely light and fast hand, and it just sort of squashes away under the weight of the scissor. That and there just aren't that many around to practice on. Would love to see a picture of yours!
