How much do you pay riders to transport your horse to an event?

With the cost of fuel etc. so high I am just wondering how much is a fair amount to charge per mile for transporting horses to events? I have a 17t 6 horse twin-axle Scania and a little 7.5t DAF. If I take one horse out solo I obviously take the little truck and I only charge for diesel (which I know doesn't cover insurance etc.). When I take out more then I split the mileage between owners and at the moment I charge £1.30/mile. I also split the ferry charges/tolls etc. in Europe.
Is this a reasonable amount to charge? I've had no complaints but would be interested to know how much owners are generally paying riders for transport.

I would charge your little truck on a mileage basis too. Why give it away for free? (which is what you are doing if you only charge diesel).

Sorry not up to speed with current big vehicle running costs, and don't have a horse with a pro at the moment!

I just feel that with the expense of entry fees, livery etc. then asking owners to pay £100's on transport on top of this if theirs is the only horse going out makes the prospect of actually having a horse competed quite daunting. I know I'm short-changing myself when you take into account the cost of maintenance, operators licences, tax, insurance, breakdown etc. but I would rather get the younger horses out in order that they can progress to be able to go out with the more advanced horses.
I'm not really looking to make a profit on transporting and I think I'm just about breaking even on £1.30/mile

How do you cover costs on 50p/km?

Owners know horses are expensive.

They don't expect you to give your services for nothing... so it shouldn't cause offence if you charge fairly.

If you've never charged for the single horse journeys, then making a change with no notice might wind them up... but if you said "From October/January/Whenever... I will have to charge x pence per mile for the small vehicle, I don't think anyone would mind.

The thing that used to wind me up on my bills, was the £2 I was charged for icetight every time my horse ran XC. Every feed supplement was also added on, as was costs for travel to and hire of gallops etc etc etc... The "full livery and competing costs" was just the first basic line of the invoice!

One rider they've gone with is £1 a mile + 10% divided by number of horses on the wagon.

The one where my 2 are at the moment is 85p km
