I was always told to shorten my stirrups by a couple of holes for jumping, but I seem to have to shorten mine by 5

in order to keep my balance over bigger fences (I only mean 3 foot +).

I'm interested in how much everyone else shortens their stirrups by for jumping:

I ride with stirrups 6 holes shorter than my dressage saddle! But that is from one extreme to the other...

Eeek! I'll have to get the hole punch out too if I go any shorter as jumping length is on the last hole.

Do you remember putting twists in the leathers round the iron? Used to do that when I was a kid

That makes me feel a bit better! I think I do ride fairly long for flat work as if I take my feet out of the stirrups and dangle them, the stirrup treads are level with my foot rather than my ankle.

Going shorter for XC makes sense as you'd take a more forward seat for a longer time.

I have a GP saddle ride on the same holes for jumping and flatwork. Not correct I know, but my horse goes well and I feel comfortable so am not really bothered.

I ride out with short stirrups- couldn't sit to red's bucks if i didn't, and i feel quite comfortable when sol's jiggling about, if i have short stirrups.

they go down 4 holes for schooling red and 6 for schooling solo...

oh, and xc and hunting... they go up a hole from hacking length!
