...how often do you have them and how do you chose your instructor?

Just curious really. I pay £15 for 45 min from a girl who worked at my yard, who had no "official" qualifications but is a great rider, rides and trains a lot of other peoples horses, rides for a well known stud schooling their youngsters and competes for other people.

I compete at what I'd consider low level, prelim - novice dressage, unaffiliated sj and xc, and would consider adding a different instructor into the mix if I started to ever compete at the same level as my current one.

Nothing for years:(

I haven't had an English lesson since 1985 with a rather fierce Cavalry Instructor :o

Western, had a block of 8 hours 6 years ago, cost me $5000 - but I did get a horse with them;)

I charge $15 for 30 minutes for children just beginning. I refuse to teach anyone older, as I really, really, hate teaching, anyway, my way is not correct for anything more than walk, trot.

I didn't 'choose' either Trainer from a list as it were.

The Cavalry chappie was a means to an end as I had to get a certificate of competency basically, to be able to ride the Saddle Club horses (very naughty Cavalry rejects;) Moldy was famous for dumping his riders on the streets of London and buggering back to the mews)

The Western one just happened to offer, seeing as I didn't know one end of a saddle from the other at the time, the lessons came with the horse.

Didn't choose a trainer, although I might actively look for one in the future. My main aim was to A) get Idiotpony used to working in an arena and B) To help us with our canter transitions, as he gets his legs in a knot.

I go once a fortnight, and pay 26.50 for 30 minutes.

I pay £35 for about an hour's lesson, when I'm not incapacitated I try to have at least one/week, two if both RI & I can find a mutual time.

My RI is a 3* event rider but is great at teaching me: I do prelim/novice dressage & would like to do BE90 maybe 100 if I'm ever brave or good enough ;)

£45 for 45 minutes (although that is flexible and we do what we need/can and I pay accordingly if that makes sense - haven't made it to an hour yet!). It's been a bit sporadic to date but hoping to make it around 3 times a month dependent on both our schedules. My RI is our local PC chief instructor, teaches for my RC, and is a no nonsense, traditional style teacher who must have taught thousands of people over the years. She's great, gives the kick up the backside where needed but is still good with the little ones. That includes the use of her lovely school and jumps as appropriate.

Dressage - £35 weekly 45 min private, the best rider in our area so I use her. She comes to me.

Ever 3 weeks SJ with guy who travels up to my area £35 for 45 min private. Young international SJumper. Have to travel for this.

Every 2 weeks SJ from local show jumper £30 for 1 hour.
Have to travel for this.

1 per week at £25 for 45 tried her loved her, age is now one of my best friends. Lessons are flat/sj/depending on what we want to work on.
1 per month at £35 for 40 mins Dressage with excellent Dr trainer.

£60/ hr private with dressage instructor. Gulp! Tis London though and am massively feeling the benefit already unlike all other instructors I have tried.

i pay £15 for half hour, but the insructor is fab and never cuts you short for time- most lessons are around 45 mins. she teaches at a local school and the local pony club, is in much demand and id happily recommend to anyone. She has the ability to give you masses of confidence but be firm and push you at the same time.

wish i could afford lessons weekly as an ongoing thing as opposed to a short term thing

thanks for the replies. It's interesting to see how much people pay.

I think I'm lucky with the situation I have at the moment, I dont feel like I'm missing out on anything through not having someone who has competed or trained at top levels, and being only £15 means I can afford a lesson weekly, sometimes twice a week if need be, which I couldnt do if I paid £30+.

Youngster and I are still in very early stages of flatwork but I notice a marked improvement after each session and am so happy with the progress he has made in 2 months and hope once we are doing a bit more i'll be able to start taking him to clinics monthly for various disciplines. :)

I am part of two riding clubs and I pay

£15 for an hour shared flat lesson (me and one other)
£20 for an hour showjumping (me and two others)
£35 for an hour cross country (me and two others)

I always have to travel to these places

:)

Hey Ludoctro

I live in Aberdeenshire, just outside Whiterashes. Looking for a good, non-extortionate instructor for both flatwork and jumping. I can go to them or we have a fab arena at our yard. Who would you recommend? PM me if you prefer.
