How much do you spend on training?

I have generally been of the opinion that unless I have a specific problem, I'd rather spend money on competitions than on training. Probably because I'm not a perfectionist and I have decent support at home (my sister is an II and has competed to high level etc, she doesnt teach me as such but she's always on hand if there's a problem)

The guy I'd class as my dressage trainer I see very rarely because he lives in Kent. I texted him when I got desperate last week to see if he's running any clinics nearer me and he invited me to his for a few days training. I'm thinking of just blocking out the cost and going anyway, may get us back on track!!

How much do you guys spend roughly on training, say every month?
Does anyone else make do without much help?

Not much at the moment!! I used to have regular flatwork lessons but as the ground isn't brilliant for my ned, we are waiting till the menege is done so i can get back on track with them. I've been ok for a little while with not much help but i feel i'm desperately in need of the schooling lessons for my canter work!!!

I try and have a lesson a fortnight but it depends on what I can afford. My instructor has just had a baby so its difficult to get lessons at the moment.

I did a 4 day intensive lessons and it was really benifical (sp) and was definatly worth the money but I did have to save up for it. I would go for a few days training

I try to have 1 from dressage trainer and 1 from Sj trainer a month, ideally need it more often but I cannot always afford it. I spend £30 on dressage and £35 on SJ. In an ideal world until the horse and I were going consistently I would have one lesson from each a week. I think if I ever plan to go away I would send my horse to one of my trainers

I have a half hour lesson evey week with my normal trainer as Herbs is a baby and it also keeps me focused as I am otherwise a lazy rider and would just hack out!

Also have a lesson with Charlotte Lasseter when she does clinics at the yard which is roughly every other month in the summer.

When Herbie is ready for hourly lessons I probably drop to every other week though,

well atm i am having a flat lesson ervy week at £25 but they have helped and i have needed it, maybe when her canter is more established i will be ok to have one a fortight and gradually decrease, but having a lesson every week gives me the security of knowing i can school her really well at least once a week as i have no facilities and then any extyra i can do out hacking, and that works well.

iv had a few jumping problems which hopefully i have ironed out now but i was having a lesson once a fortnight(which i am now stopping as they are now going to be ocne a month and we only jump a couple of fenmces which isnt all that helpful now) and some weekly gridwork has started up at £10 a time which im going to try and do some of those!

i say it over a\nd over again but i do feel that sometimes if i had access to my own facilities i could practise better in between lessons as when im riding ic an correct my own problems etc and feel like i know what im doing if you understand what i mean. then i could have them every few weeks to sort out any issues i have come across!

Millie is really the horse that you need to keep on top off, especially atm, and we have found that jumping her 4 times last week did her toe world of good and she probably doesny want to be left to jump every couple of weeks as it excites her too much next time around!

I varies wildly. Sometimes I don't have any lessons for months, and then I will go and have one every week / every other week for a couple of months - depends on how the horse is going andwhat I'm aiming for and / or competiting.

I have had some intensive training (ie week long courses etc) which I find really helpful, especailly just before a lot of comps are coming up.

I try not to let any problems get too bad before booking a lesson, but I don't always notivce them 'til they bite me in the bum!

Nothing atm.
Will start having a few more after this weekend as I doubt I will event after saturday.

Madmare has been helping me with my flat work which has been superb.

Will pay around £40 for my lessons with the Taylors

ETS that I will prob only have a lesson once a month tho, as will go BSJA instead of eventing.

I have either a lesson a week or every fortnight at £30 a time. I must say though I have an awesome instructor and we've come on leaps and bounds since he started teaching us. Once we're more established then I'll move them to once a fortnight to give me time to practise!

At the moment i have a hour lesson nearly every weekend because we need the help and guidance, I want to do things right with Flash. Costs me £10 an hour, and worth every penny I think

Most of my money goes on competing, would love to have a flat and jump lesson every week but in reality its once a month for each so a total of about 60 squid but as we are currenlty grounded with the F&M restrictions I have been having a few more to relieve the boredom

If I have a problem will work on it for a few weeks, its just hard sometimes finding someone on the ground with a good eye, I can build courses and grids all day long but finding someone to watch as say what she is doing and what I am doing is harder, rambling on but hope that makes sense

Yep I have little budget and my lifestyle means I' only free for lessons one day each weekend , trying to match that in with the busy diary of a good trainer and my lessons are infrequent to say the list.

My YO is very talented and does help me out between times though and I do pay her for it but not very much at all and it;s more like we work things out together.

As you well know you have to be able to ride your horse on your own as you don't have the trainer there at the competition.

I think a short intensive session with your trainer sounds like a good idea. I'd love the chance to do that.

I've only ever had training once!
& That was SJ with Anne Marie-Taylor - she was very good

I think analysing what you do at competitions is the way forward!
It sounds silly, but if you can point out and highlight your faults, then you go to the next competition feeling determined & positive

I can spend quite a lot it usually depends on what trainers are down and avaialble. I do try and have dressage lessons aas often as possible. Hence some months a may pay £20-40 or occasionly if there are few good trainers available at the same time £150+.

I spend quite a lot. £40 fortnightly lesson with regular trainer, and trips to clinics quite often. Plus lessons on schoolmaster/lunge lessons when I can. I definitely pay more on training than on competing. Planning a week away for training in September, which will cost quite a bit but should be worth it.

Well recently we've spent a fair amount on training for me and Hatts, mainly because i've wanted to be absolutely perfect every time out (total perfectionist

) but from now on for a while im going it a alone with my Mum (who watches all my lessons) as guidance

normally ill have a dressage lesson the day before an event and ill have a SJ lesson once a month, sometimes less - it depends.

I just dont see the point of using a BE event as "training" as it's just so damn expensive - i like to go out there knowing i have every possible chance of having a good dressage and double clear.

A lesson every week with a dressage trainer and a couple of times a month with a BE or BSJA accredited coach.
It's paid off especially for Chocolate as his dressage has come on hugely.
I can see a difference in the way C rides, as a former instructor myself there are times I have to bite my tongue as Mum's teaching daughters doesn't work very well, but the dressage no longer holds the slightest worry for her, she knows exactly what to do and with more practice in BD should get even better.
The Sj is her weakest phase so that will be concentrated on more over the winter, with the dressage comps purely for fun.
We don't have any help XC, we hire a course and either her Dad (a mean XC rider who rarely gets anything but a clear) or I walk along and advise a bit.
I can't see how anyone can progress without eyes on the ground myself, there comes a level where the knowledge and skill stop and you need someone to carry the training further.
If you hate the idea of weekly lessons then I would spend your money on regular clinics with your trainer, then use your sister to help between them.

Hmm, well I am now having lessons prob once a fortnight at £20 a time, but does vary depending on what is going on, where am going etc etc. Will also have the occasional clinic/training show which helps as in more of a strange environment, which is what G needs.

I spend around £105 a month on training - generally either two lessons with Andrew a month and one with Kay, or two with Kay and one with Andrew. i am a perfectionist, and i know where i want to be - plus im totally petrified of spoiling Archie

In October ive worked out il be spending £475 on training

Im not competing for the whole of October, and Archie is going to stay with Andrew for a week to 'learn' changes and halfpass and be schooled by him every day. Il have 3 lessons with Andrew aswell during October, plus ive got two sessions with Emile Faure at the end of October which are £70 a session. Then il take him out for his medium debut on 17th October at Burrows Court.......(if all goes to plan that is!)

Im sure most of you think im totally potty spending that amount of money, but im not going to get where i want to be without a lot of training and support from my trainers and if it means spending every penny i have along the way then so be it. I love what im doing and im so excited about mine and Archies future that im determined to get everything spot on.

I have a dressage lesson weekly at £20 a time and a showjumping lesson probably once or twice a month for £40 !!

when you have youngsters i think it is good to keep yo there training i also sent my youngster to trainers to help them !!

My colt will be broken next year which i will do in about april May he will then have summer off and i will bring him back in october work him for a few weeks then send him off for a few weeks at my trainers maybe longer if i think he needs it - this will be at £600 a month !!

i spent about £120 a month and i need it...i dont have all the facilities at home and i need someone knoledgeable to knock me into shape and guide me and help!

I try to have at least one lesson a week. Will go and visit local trainers and attend clinice when I can. I darent add up the amount that I spend!!! I believe that you can learfn something from everyone

Weekly lessons with local event guru, and a dressage clinic every couple of months too. I am someone who benefits hugely from regular instruction and progresses a lot quicker.
( and may well have to live on baked beans on toast due to her crippling horsey addiction!)

I probably have a lesson once a week - I have no facilities at home so for me it would cost £10 to hire an arena or even more with jumps so for an extra £15 I get someone to put up poles and shout at me to improve.
I spend probably £100 a month but I pay no livery, hay or straw costs though.

I'm much the same as you Boss, i don't have any lessons, but my mum kinda knows what she's talking about so we talk about things (she doesn't give me lessons) although she's (we're both) a little out of our depth when it comes to 2* and above dressage..

I'm lucky in that i have a friend who will teach me for free if i work for them, so they've helped me too in the past, although only once this year! i'm half thinking of trying to get back to them before Blair, but don't think i have time

I try to have lessons every week, if my BSJA accredited trainer is at home. I usually take both horses, but can can see a difference in my riding if i miss afew lessons.

I have not had a lesson for 4 months due to horses injury, so first one this week! *eek* Bad habits will be back no doubt!
smile.gif

I probably spend at least #80 on lessons, fortnightly with gareth at his yard, I have occassional sessions with YO for #10 and if Gareth doing a clinic at my yard it will be 50 not 40 per session. I would rather have training than go to a competition if I had to chose
