How much do your Springers weigh?

As title really, we recently rehomed an adult springer spaniel bitch from the council kennels who was underweight i.e. could feel hipbones and ribs, though when checked at the vets we were told is the perfect weight (12kgs) and not to put any more on her  She is a bit more 'covered' now but we can still feel hipbones and ribs easily.

She's very energetic and bouncy and wolfs down her food, just wanted to compare with other Springers on here :)

Also, what/how much do yours get?

Thankies in advance :D

My Springer weighs 24kg :D But he is a big dog, 21 inches to the shoulder and huge through the barrel. He is actually only just covered at that weight, any less and all his ribs are visable.
I feed him by eye, he gets more or less depending on how he looks, but generally he gets about 300g of Acana Wild Prarie split into two feeds a day. He has a sensitive tum, and does fantastically on the Acana.

I don't have a springer but I do have a big cocker!!:eek::D:D

Sweep has weighed around 18kgs his whole adult life - which according to the vets is right for him - so unless she is a tiny springer I would have thought she could do with some more weight on her. How old is she and she been speyed?

Mine are both fed mainly raw food but also have Skinners - the hypoallergenic variety.:)

I was always of the impression you should be able to feel their ribs easily.:)

Wow that was quick!

Will have a quick measure of her but am unsure of how big she should be really, not had a springer before to compare to!

We were told by the kennels that she is 3 years old and taken in as a repeat stray but again, when checked at the vets were told she could be anywhere between 1 and 6 years! Vet also couldn't tell if she was speyed or not  but said to wait and see if she comes into season before booking her in for an op! Is this an unusual approach?

She is currently on a tin of Butchers and mixer a day, but we are upping this currently :)

Thanks again, off to find a tape measure!

Not sure if this will work or not...but here's a picture!

Sorry about the size am new to this posting pictures malarkey!

We are not sure about what has happened to her nose as she's a rescue but vet reckons she was born like that :) and it doesn't cause her any problems!

Mine's about 16 inches to the shoulder (he seems quite small compared to others I've seen?) He weighs 20kg but is a bit stocky and is currently on a diet. It's tricky cos he's been on lead walks for a month due to a minor operation/staples and when the babies get treats for doing as told, he gets one too.:o

Obviously, bitches are going to be smaller, depending on type, but she looks younger than 3 and I'd say do it by eye, as someone else said. Mine's on a tin of commercial dog food and a handful of mixer a day.

My springer will be 3 yrs old in Nov 2010 and he weighs about 22kgs (he is quite tall though)......

You can feel his ribs, but can hardly see them, and he does have a waist-line..... IMO he does need to lose a few lbs!!

He gets 2 feeds a day...... a very small handful of Bentos Kronen (dry complete dog food from local German Shepard breeders/discount pet store) in the morning, (as my pointer needs to put weight on and can't feed one without the other).... and in the evening he gets 1/4 of a measure of BK and cooked rabbit/beef/chicken of fish...... he IS beginning to lose weight VERY slowly :)

Hmm does seem she needs to put on a few kgs still then, though vet was very happy with her weight as is. He did say she'd be the type hard to keep weight on though!

Can I ask what you meant by looks young please CinnamonToast? Your dog looks as obsessed with toys as mine :)

Bear is very short and stocky and weighs in at 24kg
Pippa is a bit taller, but finer, and normally averages out at about 16kg
Harry is a special needs case, was the runt of the litter, and had major "issues", but is now slightly taller than Bear and weighs about 15.5 kg, but has yet to fill out.
Ditto the baby is a whopping.....3 kg and that goes up daily!

Some Springers are hard to keep weight on-Jake was a skinny wretch compared to his brother and much taller but only a kg heavier. Puppy food is good to build them up for a short time. Look for a food that's higher in protein or search the feeding raw posts-interesting reading.

She looks young, maybe because she's skinny or at least skinnier than mine. All the youngsters I see in the woods look like her where mine is filled out and stocky. They used to be skinny but went more 'square' as they got older. Mine's 7. Your girls' pompom paws denote that she's not a baby tho, as I found the fluff between the paws didn't arrive til 18 months plus.

Brig has to have a toy to bring first thing in the morning or he'll grab anything-boots etc. It's the last thing to do at night-put a toy in the kitchen for him (although that's my slipper he nicked).

I'm going to stalk your profile for photos-another Bear Springer?! You can't honestly say the baby then not post pics! How old is the baby? My puppies were 6kg at 9 weeks so is yours younger or are mine just massive?

Boo-no pics anywhere!

I have three Springers; one (Libby) is just about right weight-wise, but Molly is quite small height-wise and weighs in at a whopping 19.5kg - far too porky - whilst Ruby (who suffers from colitis) is much taller but, at the last weigh-in at the vets about three weeks ago, weighed only 16,5kg, although now I've got her tummy under control, is slowly gaining weight. Vet called her "tin ribs"!

Thank you KeepersC she is gorgeous isn't she?! :D she is passed out asleep under my feet looking adorable as I type! Got any photos of yours? :)

Will keep an eye on her weight weekly as we are upping her food, she might just have a bit of filling out to do as she grows up I guess.

Dog trainer is very keen for us to put her on a natural diet of roughly 1/2 pound of meat mixed with 1/2 pound of mixed veg daily, adding more meat and occasional rice/pasta as necessary... any opinions on this?

Thanks :)
