Looking a the economics of having a few bags of hay bricks (compressed good quality hay) as an emergency back up this winter, but difficult to assess without knowing how much approx a small bale of hay weights.

My thinking is that if a small bale of hay is now £7.50 at some places, then a bag of hay bricks at £1 a 1 kilo brick isn’t a bage investment and takes up less space !

A bale of hay doesn’t weigh more than 7.5 kilos???

Guessing here but I think it is more than that, I'd say 1/3 of my body weight which would be about 15kg.

I'd be interested to know if hay bricks are eaten more quickly and more per mouthful as they are more compressed? Or do they shake out?

I'd always worked on a bale of hay being 20kgs (ish) so £1 a kilo means it would be an expensive way of doing it.
Saying that I buy the bricks from Simple Systems. They keep the horses occupied for a lot longer than a kilo of hay as they are very compressed but you can soak them for a bit to soften them up. I get the sanfoin and lucie bricks for variety but you can also get timothy. X

The weight of small bales can vary, off 1 field I've had bales from around 8-10kg to near 20kg.

Depends a on grass type, density, and greeness at baling. Bales will probably be lighter this year on average in most regions as grass growth hasn't been great.

The bricks last about half an hour with my girls. I did try it a few weeks ago and it didn't seem to get us much further forward

It totally depends on how they are made, different ballers make slightly different sizes and how heavy they pack them. We make for ourselves and sell any surplus our bales are about 25/26kg when dried. Our friends are about 15kg.

A bale of hay would be more like 20kg , some more than that

I was always told 20/25kg but I suppose it depends. I've had some quite long heavy bales and some short light bales so I suppose it just depends on supplier and density of the hay.
