How much does a strangled test cost from your vet?

Morning! Am not a new user, but haven’t logged in for such a long time, I had to set up a new account as I couldn’t remember my login details! ???

I’m buying a new horse and need a strangles test done, the thing is, the seller has told me it’ll cost £115 which seems rather steep. I wanted to get it done before the vetting so I could have the results in time but the price she’s given me on top of what I’m spending for my vet to do the vetting as well as the cost of transportation is quite a lot so I’m thinking I might well wait for my vet to do it at the same time as the vetting.

I was hoping I could get a ball park figure on how much a strangles test is to see whether it’s reasonable or not.

Horse isn’t local to me (about 2 hours away) but we’re both in the South West.

Thank you!

£115 for a vet visit, blood pull/swab and lab fees doesn’t sound too way off.

It might best to get her vetted, then only if the horse passes the vetting getting your own vet to do the blood pull at the same visit? Saves wasting the strangles test fee if the horse fails (though fingers crossed for you that it does pass).

Don’t know how long it takes for the results for that test to come back, though.

The last time I had one done it was about £50 for the test itself.

I should think the price the seller has quoted to you includes callout and whatever the minimum vet consultation time is.

Doesn't sound too far off if there is the call out fee etc, maybe a little bit expensive but not so out there. You can always ask if the vet can invoice you directly?

We require new arrival to have this too - almost always around £100 ... and then another £200 if they need the follow up swab/flush/whatever it is borderline cases sometimes need!

That’s what I thought, I’d pay it myself, it just seemed a bit steep but then I didn’t think about the call out fee so I suppose it’s reasonable. Thanks ?
