How much does it cost to run a lorry?

Looking into buy a Ford Cargo 813 or Mer 814D lorry (type), 3horses plus living. Can anyone enlighten me on costings eg cost of tax, insurance(old fart rate), plating and recovery costs (RAC), plus miles per gallon and anything else i've forgotten.
OH would problably do general servicing but how much do you pay???

How much do you think you want to spend on a lorry initially? My friends mechanic told her that parts are getting really hard to get hold of for Cargos. Also what size horses will you be taking as a 7.5 ton with living and 3 bigguns will poss put you overweight. I've got a Eurocargo 751E which I picked up realtively cheap but had to fit the living.
 
about 10K mark
Drive friends Iveco, but don't know what size tonnage but that pulls 3 handsomely. Being old fart can drive 7.5 but normally would carry 2 ggs but would like option to carry 3
So that prob why Cargo are cheaper?
 
Hello, I have bought a Iveco 75E for 6K - it needs abit of finishing off, but is basically a good chassis cab and half finished box!! N reg.

There is a Daf for sale near me at 8.5k looks fab J reg, new conversion etc Am quite jealous actually!!

ANYWAY..,..... have paid 165 for a years tax, 270 fully comp with recovery (Anthony Evans) and am tweaking it to use (auto elecs) signage, partition padding etc.

It will carry 3 big neds cos the living is unfitted - will weigh it before putting 3 on tho!!

It is freaky to drive - like a bus!! flat steering wheel - doodie ( as my daughter says!!!!!)
 
I picked mine up for £8,000, but as I say it needed the living done. 7.5 ton will carry 3 but you will be overweight. Here's mine

My insurance is about £300 per year with breakdown as I am an old fart too. I'm not sure about MPG as I just fill it up

It's slightly newer model than the Cargos so parts should be easier to get, therefore cheaper. I think I had to spend about £800.00 this year to get it plaited serviced etc ect, but I had a few extras jobs done to it. It failed on minimal things like it needed to reflectors on the side. I hoping this year it will be cheaper. It's really easy to drive, just like a big van and always starts.

our insurance for the lorry is £380 a year that includes breakdown cover/over night stabling for horse if we breakdown/taking horse home if near enough/overnight stay for us in B&B and all the usual stuff, thats with NFU

I bought mine privately. I think you will get a better deal. Do you know someone who could check it over? By the way I just looked at the weight of my lorry and it's 5900 without tack and gee gees. Bearing in mind my 15.3 1d x tb weight 600kg

er well we just had ours plated/MOTd (whatever you call it) and it cost £1300

However we had to have a new break caliper on the back which was £600 inc labour and Vat. So around £700 just for the plating. I think tax is like a normal car, was around £120 a year if i remember rightly x

When you brought did you have lorry mechanic crawl all over it just to see what condition was like???

Dont go by the weight on the plating certificate that is attached to lorry somewhere in cab. This is the weight at first registration...NOT the weight once converted to a horsebox.
Check the weight shown on the last brake test report (part of annual) . This will give weights for both front and rear axle but keep in mind that at time of test the figures will include someone in the cab.
Sent mine for its annual still loaded with all the usual crap plus a full deisel tank and full water tank. Came in at 5947kg so could carry 2 average horses but not 3 legally.
Lorry is about to go on a diet as was rediculously over engineered whan converted. Could easily save another 300+kg

The actual cost of a lorry MOT at a Vosa station is around £50, I took mine myself the last couple of years, only additional costs would be for a mechanic to take it through!

Would highly reccommend you get a mechanic to look it over. I'm just looking at the moment for another 7.5 tonner and I am fortunate enough to have a lorry mechanic as a friend so he is coming to check them out for me! 3 to go see this weekend, v.excited!

Also edited to add, the mechanic I was chatting do last night, came to fix a generator at our yard, begged me not to get one that did'nt have a tilt cab!!!!!!
 
Definately definately definately get someone very knowledgeable to have a look. If you don't knwo soemone, I would say worth paying a pro.....friend of mine rues the day she didn't, has ended up significantly poorer with a lorry that isn't safe to put a horse on safely, all for the sake of saving a few hundred pounds......
 
wish list
is tilting cab, least amout of electrical crap as possible in cab as they only brake, isolator switch for battery and if have any electrial stuff in living a leisure battery. Want a service record of some kind
Horse area:, rubber matt well padded and well looked after space and i don't mind where tack goes in outside lockers or in living, but as much storage as possible

Want 12months MOTand Tax- would like nice paint job but really would settle for clean and tidy bodywork

Have i forgot anything else thats a must

User friendly ramp you can put up (and down) on your own.
Spare wheel.
Solid floor in horse area. Can still be rotten whilst looking well cared for so beware.
