How much does your dog cost a year!

Hi all,

Still trying persuade my OH for another dog! Not succeeding so far!

One of his arguments is another cost for next 15 yrs!!!

Can any of you guys give me costs for a toy/minature poodle!


To cut down costs, I'm planning on doing the grooming myself! I don't have dog insurance, just save monthly.


help would be greatly appreciated !

Bizarrely we can have 4 more chickens, but they are ok as they lay eggs and give something back and save money!!!
 
How long is a piece of string? Depends on what you feed, what you plan to do (training or agility etc) what medical problems or vet bills might crop up.....
My older dog has cost thousands in vet bills alone, although he only cost £300 to buy.
 
Tenner a week to cover feed, jabs, worming so £520 allowing for pickiness & treats.
Whatever kennelling or alternative you may need.

Whatever else you want to spend.
 
One of mine has cost me £1600 in vet bills in six months, excluding routine vaccs/flea/worming, £14 a month in insurance well spent.

Including specialist equipment, training classes, competition fees etc. I could and probably do spend thousands a year. :o

Was hoping for a rough guide on how much food costs are really as have big dog on a 20kg sack of dog food.


Understand there could be vet bills, it's just everyday general stuff,
 
We have two and they still don't cost us as much as the horse does . . . plus they're housetrained and are small enough to sit next to me on the sofa and sleep on the bed . . . so as far as OH is concerned they are better value for money ;). Little does he know . . .

After initial vaccinations mine do not get any more. I raw feed and that costs me £20 per month and £10 for petrol to collect. Not sure what a freezer costs to run.

That is to feed 13 dogs. so, say a freezer for a month is £9 that works out at about £3 a month per dog!

The terriers earn their keep ratting and rabbiting - the GSD is a good deterrent and guard dog. The oldies have earned their retirement. The Lab goes out picking up shooting and of course they are all wonderful companions!

Foxhunter where do you source/buy your raw? my OH is spending £20 a week for our 9 + maybe 3 rescues at anyone time/week. Im thinking he is a convenient lazy sourcer of meat:eek::p
Granted I have some big dogs but i am assuming you do too?

Vet fees/worming, vaxes for me are not a worry as it's a perk of the job and practicaly pennies, food is obviously the most. I train my own dogs so no training fees and I also groom so no grooming fees and no kennel fees for holidays as thats called (my sister or mam) :D
I did buy a doggy van (large purchase) but we use it for business too.

If you have saving for vet fees and don't need insurance, which should ideally be a good ew hundred to start with otherwise if a fee crops up early you may struggle, then you just need to look at neutering, vaccinations, worming, flea treatment.
Puppy class/training, pet sitters/dog walkers/kennels costs (stuff like this)
Food, lead, bed, crate (if you crate train) long lasting goodies (kongs are you friend):D
 
Mine costs £20ish per month to feed raw
£13 in insurance
Vacc/check up was £35, so £2.90 per month.

So approx £36 a month- just for him to be around, no emergencies/replacing stuff (leads/collars/beds/toys)

Surely you can work out how much you would feed a toy poodle and estimate costs that way seeing as you already have a dog.....

Yes i already have a dog but she is a large weimaraner, i have dogs trust membership so covered for liability etc.

Having a large dog who is extremely greedy i know what she eats but wasn't sure on a toy size dog.

I will crate train this one, but have offers of many diffrent size crates.


Are poodles prone to any problems, vet wise? I'm hoping to do agility and also understand the risk of being trodden on as we are used to big dogs.

(Touches wood) My weimy only see's the vet for jabs and thats in the yard, out the back of his car!

Just need a good defence for why i want another dog!

My weimy does have separation anxiety and this mostly doesn't cause any problems as she is with me 24/7 and is happy left alone in boot of car but occasionly it would be nice to leave at home and think company of another dog would do her good!

I thought she was ok left at home until the neighbours told me she screams!

Have left her at home with OH for past 3 days as he is off work so maybe he will start to realise how difficult it is, not popping out when you want to and just leaving the dog behind for hour!
 
i've just bought my 11kg dog a 15kg bag of skinners for £20 and that will last her over 3 months. (i think bag says around 130g/day for her size.) I would have thought a miniature poodle would be a similar size? So pretty cheap to feed!
