hey :)

my neddy is 16hh, 8yo, welshDxtb gelding he is a middle weight but more light weight than heavy, i condition scored him yesterday and i gave him a 4 out of 5 which i classed as fat. i also weight taped him and he was 532kg.

he definetly needs to lose some weight but not really sure how much ? what would be his ideal weight ?

how much do your horses weigh ?

15.1 TBX, 15y.o. and fairly solidly built. He's in pretty good condition atm, last time I weightaped him he was 470kg.

Weight tapes are terribly inaccurate as they take no account of how long your horse is. As a comparison for your own horse, you'll be able to check his weight loss, but comparing his "weight" with another horse's, especially one you haven't seen, they are about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Can you get him to a weighbridge? My vet has one close by to me and my horse was weighed at 630 kg just before he had an operation. They will weigh any horse. Or you can put him in a trailer or lorry and weigh it with him in it and without him in it.

Weigh tapes are also pretty useless on horses which are thin, because if there is any dip under the tape then the horse doesn't, according to the tape, weigh any more until it has filled in the gap.

My boy weighed in at 575 with a weightape, we all just laughed at it due to his elephant height. At Liphook, we actually weighed over 800 kilos, so you are dead right lol

They are good for testing if your pony has lost weight tho, its good to note the measurements once a month if your pony has a weight problem.

I have to agree that weight tapes are incredibly inaccurate. I have one horse who is long in the back, and one who is terribly short - I don't believe the weights that I get for either of them according to weight tapes! ;)

We have a weigh bridge at home as my OH family are farmers and also have a green waste business and all the council lorries get weighed when they come in.

My british riding pony who is a companion for my mare is 11.2hh.

He weighed in at 220kg and I feel he is too fat hence being muzzled during the day.

My 4wk old foal wieghed in at 80kg.

His mum who is a 17yr old crabbet bred arab weighed in at bang on 500kg, she isnt a fine arab and has a bit of bone about her, although I dont have a current side shot of her without a rug on you can just see her ribs when you look at her side on.

She is fed happy hoof and a bit of mix twice daily and has a good decent amount of good hay at night.

I dont think weigh tapes are accurate but still use them anyways. My cob is 15.3 and weighs about 675 according to tape. Sounds a huge ammount but the first 2 pics in my signature where only taken on the 10th of this month and i dont think she looks too fat?

Frankie 16 2 TB but a chunky model
He weights about 550kg -565kg when I have weighed him at the vets.

The weight tape consistently puts him at 525kg - 535kg.

So I don't use it to work out how much he weighs but I do help spot trends before they are noticeable to the eye.

Had my 14.3hh Sec D weighed on a proper scales last summer and he was 490kg, and an 'ideal' weight. Find tapes grossly innacurate and never use them now.

My 14.2hh Fell type (In sig) weighs at 475/483kg on the tape, she looks chunkier than she is as she has no muscle tone due to retirement, so Im happy with what she is... she hass lost about 150kg since Ive had her!
