Just had the vet out for the first time to Molly. Havn't needed a horse vet for ages but was still shocked when they charged me EIGHTY POUNDS just for 5 min visit! No medication, just a visit! Am I living in the last century? My last vet charged less than £40 about 18 months ago.

£50 call out on office hours Mon-Fri. £75 for emergency / out of hours. Then whatever on top of that.
We have zone visits set up with our vet too, then its only £30 mon-fri office hours call out on your areas zone day.
Could have changed though, not had them out for nearly a year..

Sadly yes about right, call out £30/40, consultation same.

One local practice here started doing free call outs in 20 mile radius on a Monday, they are cleaning up and getting all the non emergancy horsey work he as free call out is a massive saving!

That sounds about right... our call out fee is 45 pounds, minimum 20mins equine time at about 25 pounds. It has gone up a lot over the last year.

That's a very expensive call-out fee! Mine is £40 or £25 on a Thursday :D Guess when I have all non emergency calls done.

I'd give them a call and question call out fees to get an idea and then maybe shop around?

Just got the bill today for the last vets visit for ours. Vet came out for a repeat blood test on the Cushings pony and to have a look at the young daft one who became lame overnight and wouldn't let us have a good look at her leg (we could see the swelling). Visit charge was £38, equine exam was £45. To be fair, she was here for well over an hour not 5 minutes.

ETA: Ours also do zone visits where if you need them out for non-emergencies the visits are free. They do our area 2 days a week, so handy for teeth, vaccs and blood tests.

That's why I trailer mine over to the vets if it's a routine thing. The diesel for a 40 mile round trip is cheaper than the call out fee!

£70 call out plus exam fee here standard - so a visit is £130 before they've done anything.

But they do free call outs one day a week for routine things, you just pay for drugs etc - so vaccs cost me only £30 for example. They also have a day when you can have the mobile diagnostic unit out for only £25 call out if you pre-book, other days more money.

The free days balance out with the emergencies that are always on a non free day!

I called vet out for one of mine about a fortnight ago, he came out the same day and just gave advice. Also had flu and tetanus jabs for two of em whilst he was there and I couldn't believe the bill was only £90 :)

About £40 for the callout and then between £35 and £10 depending on whether it's first examination, re examintion or a brief examination. Only had the last of these once.

I thought I paid over the odds but clearly not after this thread!

I've had a vet out twice in the last 2 weeks. First cost £80.22 including call out, examination and 8 antibiotics.
The second cost £58.88 inc call out, examination and 10 bute sachets and a syringe.

I had the 1/2 price visit for Dizzys mudfever (they are in the area on a set day). Vet had a very quick look, gave me antibiotics & bute and some bloods. Bill came to just under £200 plus another bill for £75.00 - ouch.

Vets fees seem to have increased dramatically recently, I'm amazed every time I open a vets bill. The last one was for having the 2 house cats and 2 yard cats vaccinated and wormed - the vets did it when they were already on the yard for livery horses (struggle to take 4 cats to the surgery) so the call out should have been split 3 ways. Even so the bill was £232  I'm sure it was far less last year.

I tell you what I have found has changed (and this includes small animal vets) - not only do you get charged for the syringe, the needle and whatever is in it but also a fee for each injection given

Had I known it would be charged like that making an injection far more expensive, then I would have happily administered myself :O

That does seem reasonable, Had to vet out twice recently once on the 28th December and again on the 31st Dec. Both visits were during normal working hours but because the surgery was closed for Xmas from the 24th December til 2nd Jan, I was charged for each visit a
callout fee of £25.20 (inc. VAT),
out of hours surcharge £40.50 (inc. VAT)
examine and advise £36.29 (inc. VAT)

Plus all the other bits and bobs that were needed all in all added up to over £600!

Must remind my 2 never to get sick/injured over the Xmas/New Year fortnight in future!

Mines a 30 or 35 pound call out (can't remember!) and about 60 pounds out of hours :)
Not sure what examining fee is but I had my vet out the other week to do a general health check on 3 and to take a close look at the section-a's leg. The bill came to 95 pounds. He was here over an hour. I thought it was very reasonable.

unfortunately that sounds about right nowadays :( last 2 bills cost me £80 each for a 5 min visit to give some stupid antibiotics. Grrrrr I hate vets bills, rip off.

£25 callout, or £12.50 on a zone day if a non-emergency. My vets are equine only and are FAB, too. :)

But I pay £9 a month for each of mine to be on the Health Plan.... which includes an annual assessment, vaccinations, teeth, 3 worm counts and one Equest Pramox.

Our vets have a zone day so if it's not an emergency so can wait for zone day there isn't a call out fee :)

If it's not a zone day I wouldn't expect any change out of £90.00
