how much for 2 fetlock xrays???

How much would you expect to pay for 2 fetlock xrays??????


I have a friend whos shire x gelding has windgalls on the rear hind fetlocks (one side bigger than the other) and she would like them checked out, what would she expect to pay???

Well, its not going to be two xrays - its going to be a minimum of 4 rads per joint (ie 8 radiographs) and most likely will require sedation plus a visit fee (or she will need to transport him to the vets). Iwould think she could be looking at close to £400. Depending on the practice it could be a little more/less.

thats a very good point!! it will be at least 4 xrays!! Think she is quite concerned as one of the windgalls is rather large!! To really know whats goin on i think she needs to xray????? As the vets will probably do this in the end anyway (once scanned ect, cant tell you the true outcome until xrays)????????

I think she would probably require both to be honest. Quite often windgalls are not due to boney changes (therefore radiographs may show nothing) and an ultrasound of the joint and tendon sheath by a very experienced vet may well be sufficient. I would think any vet would suggest both should be done if she is very concerned. Also, be aware that a lameness/horse examination fee may apply as trot up, lunge and flexion would all be the norm if investigating something like windgalls.

Mine went to the vets for xrays and we paid around £40 per radiograph. Mine didnt need sedated as he was very quiet on the ground.

overall i paid £80 for 3 xrays of my tbs left canon bone. it was about £17 per sheet (the things the picture goes on) cant remeber what the rest of the charge was for without looking at the invoice

You pay for the radiography which for me was around £100 mark
the for each plate that needs to be done which will be a min of 4 normally which depends on vets paid £15 for each plate from one vet and £30 from another vets.
Then the call out fee on top if being done at the yard.

Had same x-rays done 3 times, 2 by same vet practice and one by another all for hock area and all were different prices. If your friend rings her vet they can give you a guided price and if you take the horse to vet save a little bit of money.

Some equine vets will have a portable x-ray machine so that may keep the costs down. Why on earth doesn't she ask her vets what the approx cost will be? Also, if she's going to be putting in a claim on her insurance, she needs to let them know before the x-rays are done. Even if she isn't planning on claiming, she should let her insurers know or there could be trouble further down the line.

a very good point and until today,,, i didnt nor did she,, realise that really is a must!!!!


she has been unable to get the vet out today but he is coming tomorrow and the cost of the scan she said would be £80, and advised that scanning alone would only show up tissue damage, and to get the full picture would need arthroscopy to see if there was futher damage in the joint,,,,would she be questioning djd/ocd?????????

when he went away to horspital he had his spine and hocks done and they used 11 x-ray plates and it was close to £400. the x-ray set up alone was £100.

eta- front feet were x-rayed at home for navicilar. 10 plates used= £110. roughly £200 overall. excluding sedation and call out ect.

Im liking this thread - I want to put it up in reception for when our clients come in and complain about the prices!!! (though that also would mean that the bosses would see it and probably UP the prices in line with your lots,so maybe I wont!!!)

We charge around £180 for a set of x-rays (8 in a set) so even if we went the furthest distance away from the practice (£45ish visit fee) and gave a standard sedation ( about £30 ) we wouldnt be anywhere near what some places charge - and thats for a vet and a nurse for at least an hour, £50k worth of x-ray machine and instant results.(and liason with whoever (referral or farrier,that kind of thing)after if its needed.
