This is for anyone who's bought a young eventer/competition horse before it's done anything, I just want to see what people expect to pay. I'm currently shopping around for a youngster to bring on and event, also dressage and SJ, can be unbroken or partially broken. How much does it vary? I don't want a TB - something irish or TB x warmblood. I know breeding is a major factor, but also experience.

I'd say it varies hugely depending on the breeding i.e. proven eventing lines and also where you buy from. I'd say you'd be looking at between £3k - £10 for something unbroken.

In fact, if you're interested I know of a small stud with some lovely 3&4yr olds TB x Warmbloods. PM me if you're interested and I'll pass on the details.

In dollars because I'm too lazy.
Currently we have a 4 year old tb never raced, backed and well started (doing baby events, but at 4 still green) wanting $15000, I'd rather keep her for a few years than accept less.
Unbacked 3 year old event prospect (Champion for his age division young event horse, out of well respected event lines) his 4y/o maternal half brother is already v successful hence $18000
Another unbacked 3 year old event prospect, out of ** mare by a nice event stallion, correct but not as successful showing career, 12,500.

So really it depends what you want. I mean, obviously it's possible to get cheaper if you aren't so fussed on lines or showing record, or if you go younger.

boxcarhorse please could you PM me details of the stud you mention, i would be interested too.

Many thanks

My very well bred youngster was 3k at 6 months old. He's 3/4 tb and 1/4 trakh from Fleetwater Opposition lines. I bought his full brother for half that when the stud went into liquidation. So really the question is what's your budget!
