I have a 6yo well bred mare. Brought over from Ireland for my daughter to go onto BS Seniors with. The mare is a touch spooky but not a bad bone in her body. A friend was riding her last winter and she was fit. He took her hunting and said it was the best days hunting he had ever had, she was perfect. Not spooky at all and jumped everything he pointed her at. Perfect manners. I now have her at home, she is not fit and I do not have a rider for her at the moment. I am not desperate to sell her but was thinking of selling her as a Hunter. Would people want a fully fit horse at this time of year? What sort of price would I be able to ask for her now (unfit) and what price if I could get her fit? (I would have to pay some-one to fitten her up? Many thanks.

If someone were to buy her as a hunter right now they would want her hunting fit. Most people buy their hunters right at the beginning of the season or at the end. Chances are, if they are looking now, they are replacing a horse that has broken or one that isn't doing the job so would need something fit.

Again, if you are selling her as a hunter and she has only done one day (no matter how well behaved), you might not get a huge amount for her. You haven't said how big she is heightwise or bodywise - would she suit a man for example. Would she go in front on her own jumping or would she need a lead? If she needs a lead, she wouldn't do a for a master's horse.

Lots of questions to ask but I would get her fit first before thinking of selling her - you'll get far more money for a fit horse than one in the field.

Well you could sell her as having seen hounds, but not as a hunter.

So her value would not be as a hunter, but as a 6 year old with low(?) mileage...

i'd say 3k - unless she is exceptionally lovely. unless someone has a lot of free time you'd not get her up and ruinning this season if she's unfit now....
has she any comp record?
(to give you an idea i got my well mannered - only ever hunted - irish imported hunter in my siggy a few years back for 2k - mid summer - fat as they come. she was 10 then but needed a bit of work on her back due to badly fitting saddles - she's a perfect ladies hunter but was not experienced at anything else)

You can’t really sell her as a hunter when she’s only been once in the same way you couldn’t sell her as a SJer when she’d been to one show!

As others have said, you could only sell her as a potential hunter having seen hounds, thing is you need 6 weeks to get her fit, that takes you to January. If it was cub hunting no problem you could get her out alot and get her going, also most horses are good the first time they go, its the 2nd and 3rd time they light up a bit cos they know whats happening. I would say as she is youre looking at 2K tops.

Thanks guys, really appreciated your comments.
She has been out half a dozen times hunting but when I re-read my post, it did look as if she had only gone out once. She doesn't need a lead over anything, she is very bold.
Your comments about the 'fitness' made total sense, I suspected as much but wanted experts point of view. Thanks again.

i bought henry five years ago for 2K. he was a perfect hunter, would take a child or granny out hunting. he was 17hh tb been in hunt service
