my 19 yr old mare is recuperating from a tendon injury and daughters horse lame and prognosis unclear. am contemplating a new horse ( have small inheritance ,very lucky) and am pulled towards irish draught or id xtb ,pref a mare approx 15.2-16.1 for myself and 17 yr old daughter to share. she wants to do pc ,sj,xc low level eventing ,i want to hack safely on my own and in company and low level dressage. i like substantial horses,i have a warmblood and a highland x tb at present. what sort of price do you think i will need to be thinking of?

Depending on age maybe £3 - £3,500? I've recently bought what you describe, but 13 years old, so she was a bit less than that.

It depends on all sorts of things and whether you're willing to do some bringing on, or whether you want a ready made horse - if it needs to be a real saint or if a bit of quirkiness is okay - and whether you'd consider a horse older than 12 - and how much talent and competition experience you want.

I think you could be looking at anything between 2.5k - 6k depending on the different factors.

Agree with the above. I have two - paid £3k for a green but talented 16.3 4yr old, and £5k for a 7yr 16.1 old that was already well schooled and had done lower levels BS.

Something smaller should be a tad cheaper.

They are lovely types though. Have fun looking.

^ i'm looking for something similar and can confirm these £2k-£6k prices are pretty accurate. Its all about the age, if you're on a budget go for something younger or older, but prices for this kind of horse seem to peak at about age 7/8, of course experience dependant.

13 is about top age purely because i am going to end up with alot of elderley horses otherwise all at the same time. my daughter will probably be off to uni next summer so really want to get going now . i dont mind minor issues but safety and traffic proof are important. i have seen a nice 10 yr old id for £3000 and thought that sounded very reasonable although now i am browsing am remembering how awful the process of trying and buying is.

legaldancer where did you find your horse as i know youre near me ?

I have a lovely bay AID (3/4 Irish Draught - graded) mare - just 7 - 16.1hh. I sold her at 3.5 years and she did very well with her new owner - qualified Areas & Regionals before she was actually 4. Then she was sold to an unsuitable home where she didn't do well - and I bought her back. She's been re-schooled and brought on and would (I think) tick all your boxes.

I'd keep her if I wasn't knee deep in horses - and it would HAVE to be the 'right' home (I think too much of her to risk her being mucked up again!) - but to the right home, she would be £4,500.

If you wanted a well schooled 5 year old of the same type you'd be looking at £5,500 - and I have two - but both geldings.
