I am cutting down so I’ve made the difficult decision to sell my special child.

He is a dark buckskin Connemara (will not grey out), 3 year old standing nearly 15hh now. He has beautiful conformation, moves and jumps well and is very quiet - my kids can sit on him in the field with no tack on. Other than that he is halter broken, picks his feet up and loves people, but hasn’t done anything whatsoever. Totally genuine blank canvas.
He has good hocks especially, which is one of my must-haves in a Connemara. They are so prone to straight upright hocks which I think is when you get the back end problems becoming more prevalent in the breed. His are good though.

I know what he’s worth to me but interested to hear what others think.

Thank you!

Depends on his breeding and your reputation! I've seen really well bred 3 year old connemaras from a well thought of breeder go for 15k.

He’s over height for a show connie but probably great for a 153 pony. Depends entirely on his breeding / conformation etc. He’s worth whatever someone will pay. Duns / Buckskins are very popular so potentially that will add a premium. You can watch the Auctions of connies on line at Clifden Mart. Some go for prices up to 15k others for much less.

He maybe overweight for flat classes but could do workers. The market for overweight connies is huge. Based on colour alone I’d say an absolute minimum of £5k as he stands currently. Maybe an extra £1k plus colour premium

Current market for nice unbacked small horse that size is about £3-4k. £6-7k lightly backed, about £10k backed and ridden away. Those are advertised prices, so people will be taking slightly less. Look around on the selling sites (which is where my figures come from), should give you an idea.

My sooty buckskin 15 hands 4 year old connie, backed 2 weeks cost me £8000, 5years ago (before covid prices ).He has been worth every single penny. If your boy is well bred, has a pretty head and likely to measure in as a 153cm worker i would say between £6500 and £8000. That uncludes a connie and colour premuim. Also is he N/N for HWSD?

I'd say probably £3-4k if he was a standard colour, and probably add on another £1k for the colour, so £4-5k depending on how he's bred etc. I think most people looking for Connemaras are looking for allrounder teenager's pony, rather than something to show in breed classes.

Assuming negative for HWS? I’d say at least 6k probably 8k depending on breeding and looks. The overweight probably knocks him down a bit because of the showing but the colour puts him up again.

If you got him riding away a little and walking on the roads, I reckon 10k would be easy.

I know a very nice 15hh 4yo, backed about 3 months and just done little bits, lovely colour but not an unusual one, and he's nearer £10k.

Honestly if they are good, they are worth the money.

Sounds like a great sort, but you may be looking at bit of a niche market as a lot of people after a Connemara would be looking for one to measure in at 148 as to not preclude them from breed showing or as a childs pony to compete in pony classes.

That said, a good Connie is worth their weight in gold in my eyes!

A lot of adults are looking for an oversized Connie. When I was looking last year very green 4 yr olds were going from £12-£15K at dealers. A friend bought a well bred in height 2yr old grey 3yrs ago for £8K.

I’d say around 8K.

Me too. 5k seems to little for an overheight, pretty colour, good natured connie in the UK

He sounds like the sort I would buy, so £1500 (to me of course 🤣).

In all seriousness, I've been keeping an eye on the market and unbroken £6-8k is probably about right, although I've seen a few sell for less and a couple for more (although the ones I've seen had desirable names in their pedigree and were in-height). The price will also depend a bit on where you are based as less accessible regions still have slightly lower prices.

If you were able to back him or properly break him then that would push the price up considerably (if he was a nice ride), but I realise that would take time and it sounds like you need to sell him a bit sooner.

There is definitely a market for over-height Connemaras, I only have Connemaras now but as I am tallish I don't buy any under 14.2hh.
