Hi, just wondering how much hay you guys feed your gees.
I know its in very short supply at the moment and like evryone else im getting quite concerned about it.
I normally stuff the haynets as full as i can get them but with the shortage im going to have to ration it a bit.
I know a few people who only gives there horses two slices of hay at night when they come in, that would last mine about an hour

I supose im only giving them so much so they wont get bored being in the stable over night.
So how much do you feed?? and opinions please

Thanks

if they are in over night, my big lad gets a massive haynet stuffed full, and my pony a normal net 3 quarters full. if they were in during the day 4 whatever reason, a couple of half filled nets spread out over the day, luckily mine are out 24/7 at the mo with lots of grass, but worrying about the winter

She gets as much as she will eat while she is in, which isnt really very much, she is a typical fussy skinny TB! The other 2 are dieting so about one wedge!

Mine get as much as they will eat, horses are trickle feeders so are meant to eat basically all day so thats why they get unlimited supply. If they were fattys it would be a bit different though.

As much as she will eat - which is usually a big net, stuffed full.
If you want to 'ration', try getting two big hayledge nets (with the small holes) and putting one inside the other. It makes it harder for them to get the hay out, and the net lasts longer. I do that when we get nice timothy hay because the little gannett just chozzles it all in about 1/2 hour!

depends on the horse, how much short feed its getting, and how much grazing it gets and how much weight it has.

Years ago our vets advised me to feed good quality barley straw mixed with either hay or haylage for a horse that needed something for boredom value rather than feed value, Ive done this for years now and it works for us

I spread their hay out through the evening to make it last longer e.g a slice with their feed another slice at 7ish finally a last slice when i check them at 8.30/9pm

Ad-lib for Ali, he's in at night, sometimes in during the day too if the weather is seriously cr*ppy. But he's the type of horse that'll eat all day and still won't put weight on.

Ad lib.

I feed from big square bales & typically Jim gets 5 slices & Little Un one plus any of Jim's left overs from the previous night.

He's out 24/7 but if its terrential rain and he really wants to come in, ill let him stay on overnight

I give him Ad lib, but he doesnt eat it!

I think last time i put 3 slices in, and by mornig, he'd only eater about 1/3 of it.

Ive found if there out 24/7 theyre still stuffed from all the grass, and spend most the night sleeping, so only really eat hay when they first go in the stable, a bit for a midnight snack then in the morning when theyre ready to go out.
