Hi everyone,
just a quick question: How many bales of hay does your horse eat per day...

thinking about doing diy and want to make sure I dont miscalculate...

Thank you!

Mine is on a bale a day, he is a 17hh warmblood x and is on box rest. It depends on the size (or more precisely the weight) of the bales and also the quality of the hay- a tightly packed bale of great quality hay will feed a horse for a lot longer than a loose packed (which weighs alot lighter) bale of average quality or poor hay

Over winter about a third of a bale per day when she's in at night. Changes loads depending on weather but that would be a good rule of thumb for me.

As above mine is usually out 24/7, but if I have to bring her in she has about 1/3-1/2 a bale a night. As a suggestion using small holed haynets meant she slowed down on eating and also wasted a lot less, used to come in and just find the haynet all over her bed!

also take into account her height and build, and her bucket food and whether horse is a good doer and whether you are lucky enough to have grass in winter. 1 bale per day will feed a whopper!
