Ive now been out an bought one of those hay weighing thingies.

Now the question is how much hay are mine supposed to have??

1st is my 14.2hh Cob, he's a good doer, in light to medium work. (he also has chaff and mix morning and night)

2nd is my 12hh welsh PB, hes also a good doer in very light work.
( he has chaff and small handful of mix morning and night)

Now until now i'd been stuffing cobs haynet and guessing with the little ponies.
But i thought the cob was getting 3.5kgs and pony a lil less, turns out nothing of the sort!

So what should they be having??

How much do they weigh?

They need 10% of their body weight as forage usually. So for my two (15.1hh, solid built PRE cross and a 16.hh Anglo Arab) I feed them both the same. I've said they weigh 500kg - which is more than they really do weigh, but the weather is cold and they are unrugged. They have 10-12kg a day each, split up over the day but I would think they get about 6-7kg each overnight (12 hours).

If you can't weigh them, look up one of the calculating equations on the internet or use a weigh tape.

As a matter of interest, were you feeding less or more ?

I was feeding more then 3 or 4 times the amount then i thought i was giving!!

I did weigh them, cant remember what it was now though, so ill do it again tomorrow.

My two go out during the day, and have loads of grass, so its just nightime hay.

Woohoo! So you were feeding your cob overnight more hay than I feed a 16hh AA in a day - and I bet he was eating it too! Yes, perhaps a little too much

Especially since his grass eating needs taking into account as well. I have no grass so I have a pretty good idea what mine eat everyday (they have oats, sugarbeet and corn oil twice a day too).

2% . Getting my numbers mixed up. They'd have a job getting through 50kg a day, but they'd give it a good go!!

Yes, sorry Mistral, they need 2% forage so for a 500kg horse that's 10kg.

if they were eating it all and weren't overweight then why change anything?

also, horses eat 60% of their intake during darkness hours (a remnant of prey behaviours) - so, say your horses were to be having 10kg per day then you'd be looking at 6 or 7kg overnight.

well i thought "WOAH!!" im feeding cobbie way too much.... lol.

But yeah see you're point, im going to weigh him today and see what 2% of it is. i think last time he was 490kg, cant remember though.
