im just wondering because an owner of a horse i went to look at the other day asked if she could have my vets number to have a chat with them. which is fine i dont mind, just wondering what questions theycan answer to someone who isnt the horses owner??
i have not used my vet yet in the 6 months i have has horse(only to book in boosters), but they do have records of previous horses i have owned.
so i am not sure how helpful contacting the vet will be to them ?
i told the owner this and they said they would still like vets contact details so i gave them to her.

anyone know why????
never had late payments or colics or any health issues with them apart from a colic but that was a different vet who was closer to us that i called in an emergency????
thanks for reading xx

Probably just wants a general reference that you are a responsible horse owner, rather than specific details. If they are selling a horse they obviously want to make sure it goes to a good home. :)

You will have to contact the vet to say you are happy to discuss this horse.

Its just incase you aren't telling them anything- if only vacc record then nothing to hide. If you were to say to the vet not to disclose records to purchaser then obviously it would look like there is lots to hide.

Sounds like its nice and easy in your case tho- wish mine were only seen for vaccs!! :)

correct . ??? i went to see something and they want my vets number for reference i think but not too sure

That's what I thought you meant. I was just confused by other posts saying about you selling a horse. :) Yes, I expect it is just to check there is nothing they should know and to make sure you are a good owner in so far as the vet can assertain.

YOU are the vets client and so everyting you discuss is confidential, even with consent most vets will not disclose anything just to keep themselves safe

Do you have an instructor that maybe could give a reference. I don't really know what a vet could tell them anyway ? That you paid your bills on time ? I go a couple of years without seeing my vet for other then boosters then suddenly I seem to have them alot (could be to do with having a TB). What does that prove ?????

i dont really mind them talking to vets i just havent used them for a long time so didnt really know what they could ask them or try find out

All sounds a bit confusing??
Basically your vet will only discuss your horses' treatment /attendances to any third party ( including another vet) with your express permission - preferably in writing.

As far as acting as a character reference, there is no real ethical reason why your vet should not do this although it would be courteous to contact you first before doing so.

I shouldn't worry too much - if your vet doesn't feel that he/she knows you well enough to act as a referee for you, I would expect them to tell the vendor just that.

It is, however, common practice for you to offer the vendor your referees rather than the vendor to decide who should act as a referee.

Hope this helps & good luck
