Hi, I've been working hard with my 'loan' horse to increase her fitness and encourage some weight loss, which I seem to be achieving. Others at the yard have commented that you can see the weight loss and tone improving.

She lives out (rugged) and is fed a decent meal daily (guided by the owner, on same yard) as well as having hay.

I'm just unsure how to keep an eye on her to make sure shes not losing too much too fast. Obviously by the time I can see ribs etc I know that would be too much ... but also too late!!!

I'm sure others would let me know if they thought she was dropping too much, but any other advise would be great.

Thank you all. X

google condition scoring horses and use that to monitor her weight. Once she gets to an ideal weight/condition score it might be worth seeing if you could swop her feed or increase the amount she has of her previous one if you keep up the same amount of work. How often are you working her/ what are you doing? It will depend on her work load and temperament as to what diet will best maintain her weight. You could ring a feed company advice line.
