Winter feeding... How much is too much? In winter my lad has 1 small ish scoop calm condition (before soaking) 1 good size scoop speedie beet (soaked) and 2-3 handfuls alpha oil... Twice a day (looks about half/ 3/4 a feed skip) plus as much hay as he wants..
He's well rugged but alway slightly ribby he's schooled 3 times a week hacked or jumped once or twice depending on time.. Does this Sound like too much?
I am unable to split into 3 small meals as I would prefer.
What's your winter feed for your tbs in work?
Thanks.. Choc shortbread if you got this far... :-)

You could try adding micronised linseed as that's good for getting condition on without heating and will have added bonus of helping his feet. My TB ex racer was on 1 scoop Baileys No4 and 1 scoop chaff once a day with ad lib haylage over winter, ridden 3-4 times a week fast hacks (1-2hrs a time) and did fine on this but this summer we have gone barefoot and so her diet has changed. I'm using the micronised linseed for condition along with speedibeet and plain chaff and she's doing fine on it.

It isn't really about how much feed he gets - but what effect it has on him. Although you do need to make sure that no one feed exceeds 4 - 5 lbs as that is about as much as they can cope with all at once.

If this is the amount of feed he needs to keep condition during the winter then it is right for him, and don't worry about what anyone else says. However if he does start to loose condition you might want to think about adding barley or linseed or similar for weight gain. You can't increase his concentrate too much more without going over the maximum feed size I would think!

Thanks might try the linseed.. Last year he was quite ribby coming out of winter but changed from normal chop to alpha a oil or this year..
