how much is your horse worth?

Well, the question is what is your horse worth. For my younger horse, technically almost nothing right now, because she is on box rest so nobody would buy her

What she cost/is worth has nothing to do with vets bills as far as I am concerned. Those I'd pay for as long as the prognosis was good. If I thought she could not come sound and be ridden again I'd have her pts, because I couldn't afford to keep her for another 10 or 20 years doing nothing and the decision can't be any less painful for being postponed.

My older horse I might retire for a while once she can no longer be ridden, because she just loves being in a field doing nothing and I could still afford a riding horse. I don't like the idea of keeping a lame horse in a field getting lamer though, so if she was uncomfortable I'd have to pts.

And - personally, I know not everybody its the same - I wouldn't choose to put either of them through something like colic surgery. To me that is too painful a lottery.

dont know what id do if i had a huge vet bill-probs pay it but my parents would be furious! We got zak quite cheap at £3,000 but personally i think he is worth a lot more even though he is 13(he acts like hes 4!)luckily so far the biggest vet bill has been £74....fingers crossed!

Cairo had cancer 3 years ago and the bill was just short of £3,000 - we had our loan agreement changed to a permanent one and agreed to pay the bills.

To us he is priceless - to anyone else financially worthless.

He has just been diagnoised with cancer again and we will pay out whatever it takes to put him right - were moving, but will put it on hold - Cairo is more important.

I have Chancer insured for £5,000 worth of vet's bills - I paid £2,000 for him and he is probably now worth about £3,500 or so.

my mare was recently valued by my vet as having a sale value of between 6-8k, but i would move heaven and earth to make sure she is well and happy, i got her as a freebee and shes now out on loan, but she has to have insurance so that shouold the worst happen she can have the best possible care.

i dont view her as an 'financial asset' (although OH might do!) so she is truely priceless to me.
