Measure from horses elbow to fetlock then use this measurement to go from elbow to withers this will give you eventual height of horse

The other day halfbeat said this, and I was wondering firstly whether this actually works, and secondly whether you use the vertical height to withers or kind of go around the horse to the withers (if that makes sense!?)

I tried it on my fully grown mare and the 2 measurements were exactly the same, but my 4yr old had over 2 inches longer measurement from fetlock to elbow.

Has anyone else given this a try?

what about if your horse just has really long legs?

possibly a really silly question but I was quite curious how big my boy will get

From what i remember that measurement is meant to work on young foals, not older horses. Could be wrong though.

saw vet today and horse needs to be over 1 - he showed us how it works. seems to work for mine - means my 2yo and 3 yo will be 17.1 and 17.2. Help! But seems correct for the sizes they are now.

thats really interesting, means my boy will be 15.2/15.3hh which is quite a nice size, and around the size my instructor thought he would reach.

We'll have to wait and see and report back in a few years time. What age are they supposed to have finished growing by? I heard it was about 6, he's grown 4 inches in the last year so I wouldn't be surprised if he grew another 2 in the next year and a bit
