MRI's give more detail of the scanned area than a bone scan, but bone scans are good to identify "hot spots" of area of bone remodelling etc which might not be obvious enough on MRI...... so its a bit of a depends on the situation case.

Id ring the referral practice that your horse would go to to have either or done. and also have a talk to them about hte case and see what they would recommend.

MRI scan my mare had done last Sept cost me £512 which was 50% of the total cost which included sedation. Recent re-scan cost £300.98 and that also included sedation.

The best procedure for assesing degree of OCD is arthroscopy during which fragments can be surgically removed if neccessary. If you're paying your self I think you would be better to save your money for surgery and definately you should discuss it with the referal clinic.

Its still on insurance, op has been offered, going into both hocks and both stifles. I really don't want a knackered 4 year old.
I'm still trying to work out which hospital is the best, I have a referal for one but not sure yet??

i think the referal hospital which likely depend on the procedure you opt to have done.

MRI and Bone scans are only imaging modalities they cannot solve any problems, only highlight hte areas effected. If this is all you want then thats fine.

If you are wanting fragments removed etc then Sam is right and arthroscopy is a better option as it images the effected joint and can sort out at least the majority of the problem whilst in the joint.

4 joints are effected?! Thats a lot! Or is it imaging the 4 joints as you are not sure which it is? If that is the case then id image, identify the effected joint and then opt for arthroscopy!
If it is a "solvable" ocd then you should have a better, fitter 4yo at the end of it, if its a case of the OCD has totally destroyed the internal structure ofhte joint then that makes it a bit more difficult (but id think at 4yo this is an unlikely situation!)

Maybe ring round a couple of referal hospitals and see what they say. Also check out their websites as different hospitals have different vets with different specialities, and one might make you feel better than another (which is very important!)

He has in his left hock, roughening of distal end of lateral malleolus. Right stifle subtle flattening of medial condyle. His other hock has been swelling up to and I think the other stifle. He had all 4 joints medicated and no real change. I was made to work him thought out the medication and he had a course of adequan. Better that initial lameness but still lame. He was LH 3/10 RH 1/10 Hav'nt had a report yet from last lot of xrays so don't know the degree of lameness.

Please be aware that some horse insurance companies (the big ones like PetPlan, NFU, SEIB) there is wording that relates to MRI scans and says that you have to pay the first £500 first. Please check your policy before you go ahead, and if in doubt ring your insurance company and confirm.

An MRI for both front feet cost me about £1100, from what I remember it could have varied about £100 each way from that as it depends on whether they had to resedate if the horse moved and redo it.

I am with NFU and they pay 50% of the cost but you need to get them to agree it beforehand.

I have opted for the arthroscopy, in both hocks and both stifles. I think this all stems from when as a 2 y o he was moved from his field to a paddock away from the other horses. He went nuts and fence walked in thick deep mud. I eventually got the yard owner to move him as he developed Lymphangitis, in his back legs. I'm wondering if that was the start of this?? The surgen who is to do the op hasn't seen OCD like this, as no changes in 6 mths on xrays. I wonder if the ligaments or tendons are affected???
