My Uncle has bred 2 lovely fillys by my old jumping mare J. Now I was against it from the start as lovely as J is she is unpapered and I am totally against breeding from unpapered horses. Own personal opinion.

We know for a fact J herself is by Grafs Fenmaster, by Graf Magna. Dam is a mare called Slack Alice who was an Irish sports horse. J's mum was a JA jumping pony who was Newforest x.

Her first foal is a lovely chestnut filly ( call her R ) now 2 year old by Libra K. Now R is virtually unhandeld and is just turned away with her 2 year old friend.

This years foal is a bay filly ( Call her T ) she is by Tornado FCS.

They have been told by an ' experienced ' breeder that they should be able to get about £4500 for R and at least £8000 for T. I personally think it is being a bit optimistic.

Would love to know other peoples opinion please.

Oh, a bit much for an unproven foal? Can the foals be papered even though J isn't?

If they are not papered, then I would definitly say that price was a bit high!

I know people look at what their parents or siblings done but that really isn't a guarantee they would follow in the same hoof prints!!

I think a bit optimistic is a mild phrase. What you ask and what you get are two different things, and when it comes to horses, they are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them.

When selling youngstock, breeding is very important. As your mare is not papered, her breeding is irrelevent, as anyone can say "this mare is by such-and-such" but without papers or proof to back it up, it will be largely disregarded.

With youngstock a lot comes down to conformation etc as well. I am not overly clued up on SJ, but given the current market, the choice already out there, and the fact the mare is unregistered, I would say a 2yo chestnut filly by Libra K (£600 stud fee) virtually unhandled, at a guess would be worth around the £2000 - £2500 at the most, but it is difficult without seeing the horse in question.

The filly foal by Tornado FCS must be something very special if your friend thinks she is worth 8k, as I have known foals with fantastic parentage, having gone out and won at county shows all season be worth just a fraction of that. Most breeders I have spoken to are expecting in the area of £3500 - £4000 for their foals this year, to stallions similar to Tornado FCS/Russell/Randi etc, and out of fully registered mares.

Sorry but I think you're being completely unrealistic to the prices you think you can command for these youngsters.

I know the stallion your mare is by and he's nice but not that special.

I'd say you'd be looking at around £2k for your 2 yr old and probably around the same for the foal.

Apologies if that's not what you want to hear but there are hundreds of nice youngsters who have been well handled / shown etc on the market just now for often less money than the figures I've given you.

I think if you read what I said in my first post is that these are NOT my filly's and I also agree that they are not worth that kind of money.

I also do have one at home by that stallion and back in the days when he was owned by my Uncle he was a very special lad not just in looks but in temperment aswell.
