Just poo picked and was having a think (expect lots of stupid posts!!)

How much poo does your horse do a day? In the girls field, I get about 2 and a half wheelbarrows a day (average sized wheelbarrow) - two horses in it. But then in my OHs gelding's field (one horse) I got just short of 1 wheelbarrow!

So, how much do your lot do?!

I know right! One is a 15.2 thoroughbred who does quite a bit, but then my currently 15hh yearling poos as if shes an elephant! They're HUGE!

We poo pick into tub trugs, and we get about 8 buckets a day from 3 horses. However, when one of the horses was on box rest due to a dodgy leg, we still got 6 buckets a day out. My horse seems to do lots of medium sized poos, whereas my friends horse does fewer, elephant sized ones!

I am quite obsessive about poo picking and used to count the poos so that I knew I had picked them all up and not missed any - my ponies did roughly 12 poos per day so that was one every 2 hours each which was handy when I was putting them out in a paddock for just a few hours a day I knew how much I should be picking up. Its not such a mad thing because it relates to the health of your horse and it can indicate problems if your horse hasn't poo'd enough it could be he's off colour and not eating or could have colic. However when I put them out in a new paddock this spring my wheelbarrow wasn't big enough and I knew they were getting too much so restricted the area so that they didn't get too fat because the more they eat the more they poo!!!!

My one horse who is about 15.2hh a two yr old has been seperated from the others just recently due to being a bit tubby, and i take out one massively loaded up barrow in 24hrs, however this does include the fact he has access to his stable 24/7 so is also a bit of wet straw.

The boys manage to fill a barrow overnight - one pile of the shettie's, the rest elephant poos from the boy. And that is in the fatty paddock. Nowt to do with me :o

I was always told a horse *** should *** produce between 8 and 10 poos a day!
Nearly forty years ago, when not that many people poo-picked, I used to poo-pick with my father, by torchlight, and he made me count them! Actually, he was pretty accurate on the numbers, but after 32 years in the army he was accurate about EVERYTHING ;)

O/H has a fascination with counting poo's - he does my poo picking for me :D and my 16.3hh idxtb who is living out at the moment produced 22 in 24 hours today (his record) although they tend to be lots of little ones, rather than massive elephant poos like my old cob used to do (his record in 24 hours was 18).

Seren creates 1 full wheelbarrow of poo a day!

I would say mine do about 10 - 12 poos a day (11hh welsh and 15.1 connie x - both fatties on short grass of about 1.5 acres 24/7) - this fills a fairly large wheelbarrow every other day which is great as I leave it out in field half full on the first day and only empty it on the 2nd. Yehaa!!!! less fighting with the muckheap (and mud in winter).

Just back from poo picking by torchlight. 15 poos from 2 horses (cob + arab x) out 24/7.

I don't think they are doing enough, but there is not much grass at the moment.

One small horse, 1 New Forest and one 5 month old filly = FOUR to FIVE large barells of Poo a day :(

I have had enough if I miss a day it's hell. They are now on only a third of the paddock and allowed down in the knee high rich lush green stuff for 2 hours early morning rest of the day on short pasture with a wedge of hay to keep the peace ;)

Note to self must stop feeding the horses :D

DawnGilmour has it right. How long is a piece of string? How big is a wheelbarrow? I was always taught to count the poos, because it's a good indicator, one you know the normal amount your gee does, as to its health (e.g a horse with colic may not do any!). And yes, I think 12 a day is about normal, certainly on 24/7 turnout.

The Highland mare and her 2year old son produce massive elephant poos, about 8 a day each in the paddock plus whatever they do in the stable overnight.

The WB worried me when I first got him as he does much less and they are quite different but I have finally worked out what is normal for him too (same number but smaller and different)

Dont know how many barrows, but for a 14.2 pony he does LOADS, he poo's his way around the menage and poo's his way round a hack, I think he has hollow legs :D

We have one 14.2 and a 15.2 out 24/7 and fill about 2 wheelbarrows a day. When my horse was one his own he used to do about 10-12 (I know, I'm sad and count them!) a day but that was when he was on poor grazing, so he probably does a few more now.

Iused to have a 13.2, a 14.2 & a 15.2 & between them they produced a slightly heaped barrow a day. When the 14.2 was pts it went down to a full barrow a day. Now I have bought another 14.2 I get 2 barrows per day!

LOL! :D
Me and my mum always say you can tell true horsey people cos they're always taking about their horses poo, how much, colour, consistency etc! and you can always tell which poo belongs to which horse. :o

My big girl does around 8 or 9 massive elephant pats a day, which is about a wheelbarrow full.

Which reminds me I better go and pick it up!

haha - Shy's in the fatty paddock at night, and STILL manages to produce a barrow full in there. And he has his darth vadar mask on during the day.

I think we may all be agreed on this one - natives (and cobs) produce the elephant poos ?

I'd always heard that 8-10 per horse per day was about right. I counted the other night and in 23 hours my four had produced 62 piles (yes, OK, so I need to get a life) . . . I have 2 x 14.1hh NFs, 1 x 14.3hh Arab and 1 x 15.3hh WB, all out 24.7
