I have been reviewing our chaps feed as the grass is coming through. During the winter he has been out during the day and in at night with ad lib haylage at night plus am and pm a scoop of Speedi beet, a scoop of Alfa A and half a scoop of high fi nuts. He also has Benevit and Equidermis.

Now - I plan to take out the Alfa A and feed as before otherwise . He will be out 24/7 shortly so the haylage will not be required.

The nuts have 8% protein - no idea about the haylage but that will be stopping soon.

He is 3/4 bred eventer type and we are anxious not to overfeed. Is the protein he is getting enough?

I think it would make your life a whole lot easier if you changed to something like Winergy Equilibrium Growth and fed it at the right rate, or pick up a stud balancer and feed it alongside the correct rate of Alfa A.

I think you're guessing just a bit too much about what your boy is / isn't getting. How is he looking in himself?

He looks really well - although rather tatty as his winter coat comes out.

We gave him a stud nut (Baileys) last winter but I am very anxious not to encourage too much growth as I fear OCD and for that reason I wanted his feed more basic so he grows and develops naturally and slowly. Also the cost of the balancers is high. Thanks for your advice though

LOL they all look tatty at this time of year - you should see my yearling!!

Baileys do a lo-cal balancer which is good for good do-ers and not quite so expensive as the others) or you could try D&H Suregrow although I think at the rate you'd need to feed it then you'd go through quite a lot of it!

My now 4 yr old is warmblood and I've had her since she was a foal, she was on D&H mare and youngstock mix until she was 3 and is absolutely fine.

I did go through a phase of feeding alfa a and top spec balancer but my horses are huge and I was going through approx 2 1/2 bags alfa a per week (fed at the rate Dengie suggested). It ended up working out quite expensive!

The Winergy feeds I now use are complete and balanced so makes your life much easier - I know of several people on here who use them and feed less than the recommended rate as their horses look so well on it.
