Been offered a stable for my tb mare - shes not coping to well living out in the mud, just changed her diet so hopinh for an improvement in the next few weeks and upped the hay.

The stable is a bog standard size for £25 per week, no facilities just the stable as my field is close by. Does this seem expensive?? i am very tempted but i feel its over priced!!

I think you have to put the welfare of your mare first - if she's not doing well out, she needs to be stabled overnight.

£25 is not expensive.

I was told just for a stable - nothing else it was £2 per day. You have to have own bedding, buckets etc... - Maybe thats just cheap though? (and you have to pay for any damage, kicking or chewing too)

IMO it is over priced I was paying roughly that per week for a stable, turnout and facilities (2 80x60 areas, jumps, walker, etc).

I think that's a bit of a bargain to be honest. Wish i was near you!

£25 is a bit pricey for just a stable but it may just be for a few months - Could you not section off the worst of the field or..? what is the situation at your field is your mare losing condition being out? Has she lived out before? What was she eating compared to what your feeding now?

See theres an eq place in the next town for £55 pw - assisted delivery - they have turn out 5 days per week, ad lib hay, straw bedding, feed, paddock care, chk water, picking out feet, and a fantastic lit all weather menage.
The stables are american barn style ones.
For an extra £35 a week i can have hay, feed, straw and use of a menage plus turn out and someone to do most of it for me..........HMMMMMMMMMMM
I would be paying £25 for stable, adlib hay say if she was in all times 1 to 2 bales per day - works out to £5 per day, then straw £2 per bale say 4 per week - £8.....so thats what £43 per week, but for extra £12 i can have lots of facilities on assisted livery!

I'd say it's expensive, I pay £16 pw for stable, 24/7 grazing and menage.
However welfare of your mare should come first.

Assisted sounds like the better option to me though

Well the field has been sectioned off but its still boggy - she lives with 2 welshies - one of them is a bully and has kicked her twice already (he is off to spend the winter with the trekking centre though very soon, fingers crossed!) the other welshie is laid back and thee little coblet is doing well out.
They where having 1 bale per day just upped it to another half to a full bale depending on whats left when i go down. She was having too much feed in her bucket, just introducing baileys conditioning cubes and balieys outshine, she is fed twice per day and will be on 1 large scoop con cubes and 1 mug outshine twice per day in each feed. Strated 2 days ago so by next week she should be on it fully.
She is rugged up with a heavy weight with full neck and i have just today put a woolen blanket underneath.
I may see how she copes then think about stabling her if she dosent improve..........

Wow - I would say that wasn't much. Your mare needs adlib, although the ponies less so.

Certainly sounds like a good move to get her on to a yard.

Let us know how you get on.

Keep looking even more, even having a drive around and just knocking on horsey type places (I know that sounds odd but it has worked for several friends) because if you are prepared to up it to £55 a week I am sure if you have no ties (do you?) to your current field why not find somewhere cheaper than £55 but with a stable and facilities!

Best of luck though either way.x

Its obviously enough now, surely if they where hungrier they would eat it all? instead there leaving around 1/3 of a bale and going to the grass, i just top it up more so theres plenty there if they need it.

so yes they do have ad-lib hay

24/7 now

If your happy with £55 per week, offer them £40, as everybody knows times are tough, and I dont think there are many people taking up horses at the moment, so just make them an offer!!!!!

If you have some good grass, then yes I can see that they would be leaving this.

However, if you are putting the hay all in one place - rather than putting out several piles in varying locations - then once a horse has stood on the hay or soiled it, they won't touch it. By topping it up all you are doing is putting good on bad.

Look at feeding it in a different way. I would suspect that they are not getting enough and are leaving it once it becomes 'dirty' rather than them being full.
