We're looking for a new pony for our daughter & have seen an 8 yr old gelding which seems to tick a lot of boxes so far; obedient, well mannered, jumps 80 & should go higher, very good xc & potential dressage. Need to see him loading & amongst a group of ponies & also need to have him vetted but so far so good although his condition is poor in terms of weight & muscle. The owner is looking for £2400, is this too much? We are based in N.Ireland & just with the current economic climate, I thought we might be able to pick up something a little cheaper. Having said that I am prepared to pay for a pony that I know is safe & willing. Any advice would be welcomed.

Why is his condition poor & would his behaviour change when well & fit?

If he is being sold from the field he is dear even with wardrobe & tack.

No wardrobe included- no tack & no rugs. Don't know why he's so out of condition because it seems he has been riding up until recently, will definately ask this question. Had someone with us today who has bought from same dealer/instructor & she seems to rate him very highly so feel fairly confident that he won't try to sell us a 'donkey'!!! however !!!!!!!

You dont say what height he is, if 14.2 that is very reasonable if the pony is well proven, safe and has potential to go further, over here it could well be double the price even now.
As already suggested the lack of condition would bother me a bit as they can change for the worse when feeling well, it is something to ask about.

It sounds a pretty reasonable price for a good pony over here, don't know how prices are in general over there. How does he compare to similar things advertised?
