Hi there,

I've recently been interested in buying a horse and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how much i should offer the owner, here's some more information on the horse;

  • around twelve years old
  • welsh x
  • 15.1hh
  • very healthy
  • schooling needs work
  • doesn't like being tied up
  • doesn't like the dentist, vet or farrier
  • and also doesn't load without sedation

i realize she sounds like quite a difficult horse but i have had experience with her and really enjoy riding her and get on quite well with her, but i do no want to be spending a ridiculous amount of money on her when she is very problematic.

i would appreciate any help or advice!

Would offer couple of hundred if even that. she isn't worth much at all really based on the negatives above.. Before you leap in make sure you you are going to happy to have a horse who is like that - what are your plans for her? If you plan on going out to shows that you cant hack to you are in trouble if she wont load without sedation.

thankyou for your reply!

no im not particularly interested in competing her, she will be more of a project horse but if she improves dramatically then i would consider taking her to some shows :)

again, thanks for the reply!

I have a Vet shy horse and it's a pain.

Can the Vet at least vaccinate her?
Will she let you treat any small injuries?
Does oral sedation work on her, eg sedalin?
How bad is she with the farrier, is she OK to trim?
How bad is she with the dentist?
When were her teeth last checked properly?
How is she to worm?

The not tying up wouldn't bother me if I had a stable available so i could tack up etc... I could then work on that issue and hopefully get her to tie nicely in the future. The schooling can also be worked on. If you have local shows in hacking distance, then the loading issue might not matter. If you have to travel her for an emergency, then you would need to sedate (again is oral sedation enough? It would be a right royal pain if you need intravenous sedation with a Vet shy horse).

i believe she is okay to vaccinate and can be shod but with some hassle! i do know she has to be sedated for the dentist! i do know her teeth where checked within the last few months.
unfortunately i do not know how she is to worm or if she takes oral sedation.
she is fine when shes not tied up while being tacked she just likes to move around a bit.

You need to know what type of sedation she needs. Getting the Vet out to inject her every time she's shod or the dentist comes would be very expensive. If sedalin is all that she needs, then that's much easier and cheaper to deal with. you need more detailed info about her problems so that you can decide with your eyes open.
