3ft 3" approx for trot & slightly shorten the distance if they are raised, but does depend on the horse. I usually do one large stride (i have long legs!). Good tip, if your on your own, to save getting on and off, set them out about three large human strides apart then you can trot and canter over them without moving them.

I'm 5ft6'' and I do 2 very big stretchd strides, for someone a bit smaller I'd do 3 ordinary paces/strides, that usually gets you near enough, the if its a pony with smallish strides I'd role them in an inch compared to a horse with larger strides.

Trotting poles should be 5ft 6ins apart for a horse 16.2 to 17hh!! 4ft 6ins for a 15hh horse and 3ft 6ins for a 12 hh pony. hope this helps
