We are really lucky at our DIY yard, no bitching, loads of grass and lovely hacking. No spaces sorry! But our storage areas although generous may be being reduced. As we need to buy hay in bulk ideally I wonder how much space people generally have. We don't have to buy from yard owner which is a big part of it i guess, her hay is sometimes a bit ropey. So we are grateful!

This actually became a real issue at a previous yard where they started increasing numbers of horses and building stables without adding any storage. We weren't allowed anything outside our stables for grooming kit/boots/hats etc but were allowed 2 feed bins (as in dustbins) per horse and 1m length of racking for folded rugs! It ended up being so political and difficult that we left! You'd get notes left for you if your rugs had slipped into someone else's space!
Current yard is far more relaxed we have a fairly large feed room which we share, no rules we just sort between us, a hay barn, and are allowed boxes etc outside stables.
Re hay, that's a tricky one though as obviously to get better prices you need to buy in bulk. Could a few of you buy together? I think I'd wantspace to store at lease say 10 bales for my two horses as between them that would only last me a fortnight in winter I think!

Well it has varied, at one place had a 12 x 12 stable to do with as I pleased for storage. Last yard I was at I shared a space about 10 x 8 with one other (4 horses between us). You need room for at least 1 pallet per person, room for essential junk etc etc, about 2 or 3 dustbins too. I now share 10 x 12 stable with one other person (3 horses) but we are now independent, not on a livery yard.

If you are talking about buying in hay in bulk (more than 20 bales), then I think you need to come to some kind of separate arrangement with your YO, rather than just expect it to be accommodated in the terms of your contract. Not unreasonable IMO if they want to charge you extra storage for that sort of thing.

At my last yard I had half of the upstairs of a barn, plus a little room net to my stable. That was fantastic.

At my current yard it is a shared tack and feed room with everyone, and a hay/straw barn where I have a little strip of space. I was really worried about it at first, but actually it has been fine.
