How much time do you spend with your horse or at the yard?

Hi,

I'm just wondering how long everyone spends with their horse or at the yard everyday or what your opinions would be on how long you should spend there each day. Do you feel guilty if it's a short visit as you have to be somewhere or is most of your free time spent with your horse? I'll be really interested to see what you all think.

Thank you :-)

I am retired and single so spend hours each day and wouldn't want it any other way :)

those that have families, full time jobs just cant do that.

you have to find a balance with the rest of your life (if unlike me you have one)

I work between 35 and 50 hours per week so it is all dependent on that. Days I am working during the winter I will only get the time to turn out in the morning, and then muck out etc in the evening. Summer is obviously a bit easier time wise with the light nights so I can usually ride or lunge after work in the evenings as she is out 24/7 also. So on average, days I am working I would say anything between 1 and 2 hours per day. Days I am off and the OH is busy I will make the most of it and spend anything between 2 and 6 hours there.

I work full time away from home so usually don't see mine at all during the week. At weekends its between 3 hours and 12 hours depending on what we are doing. Not enough!!!

no where near enough as id like! about an hour in the morning but that's mainly mucking out the field and then I hope up in the evening to check they are ok, if im not riding! spend a lot of time there at the weekends though!

As much as possible, but work, my health, general life and an OH get in the way! And yes I do feel guilty with a flying visit even if his every need is met in that visit! I do love the nights I have all the time in the world to spend with him :)

I keep mine at home so as long as I can, or as little as I need, depending on my children/husband/other commitments. The average would be an hour or so riding (including tacking up/untacking), plus an hour or so to do the three stables/turn out/bring in/poo pick etc, plus an average of 30 mins to 1 hour to do something with the ponies (lunging/walking out in hand or taking one pony to my trainer's yard once a week where he does a few lessons.

So normal time 3-4 hours a day. Minimal time - I can get them all done in around 30 mins (eg Christmas/I'm out all day). Maximum time - errrm, all day. :) x

I spend about 2-3 hours in the week and probably more at weekends. My kids are older now so enjoying my free time. Hubby puts up with it< probably more than I would if things were the other way around! Do try to spoil him too though.

Edited to say 2-3 hours per day, when I read it back it seemed like I said 2-3 hrs per week ???

Weekday mornings: About 40-45 minutes. P gets tied up outside his stable whilst I muck out, do waters & haynets & his but ball to be bought in to. Then 10 minutes to turn him out - he does get fuss in this time.

Weekday evenings: Anything from 15/20 minutes to 2 1/2 - 3 hours, depending on what I'm doing.

Weekends: Anywhere from 2-6 hours a day, depending on what plans I have :)

I work in the city and my mare is on part livery. I spend about 1-2 hours at the stables most evenings, riding/grooming etc. Weekends are about the same, probably a bit longer (I'm on 7 day livery). Though if I'm competing then it's obviously most of the day.

Mine is at home, so limitless while I am off. Right down to a 10pm check before bed :)

I have just left work :D:D:D and so Jay is getting a lot of me time at the minute, three times this week we have boxed out to have good hacking.

When I was working it tended to be 10 hours shifts, and a good commute too. It was shift work though so I would get to spend 3hrs or so in the morning when on 12 X 10pm (leave for work at 11am, home 11pm). 8 X 6 was the worst, I had to leave just after 7, and after mucking out and turning out was done there was no time to ride, and after being up at 5am and home for 7pm it was hard to get to ride after.

I would say to keep my horse healthy and happy, and fit enough for low level eventing he needs 3 hrs minimum a day, with days off being longer to do bigger things like boxing out, comps, lessons etc.

My horse is on full livery. I work full time, so get to the yard around 5.30pm. I spend approx 1.5-2hrs there per evening if I'm riding. If not, I like to go down and give her a groom.

At weekends probably longer, usually at some sort of show/competition/XC schooling etc so will go out in the lorry.

All depends what OH is doing :)

I find I spend more 'quality' time with my horse now she is on full livery.

I get to my share horse at 5 or half 5 depending on when I can finish working from home. If I'm in the office I wouldn't be able to get there until at least half 6, so far I have managed to avoid having him on these days! I leave after about an hour and a half - later if I'm having a lesson.

On Sundays I'm there at 10 and leave at 1. Back about half 4 to bring him in for bed and feed :)

He is on part livery.

In the summer when she is on night turnout, 20 mins in the morning to bring in and feed, 2 hrs in the evening if I'm riding (3x weekdays) and about 30 mins to an hour the other evenings depending on what else I have to do after the yard. Once or twice I try to be quick so I don't feel too guilty about all the other hours I am there! Weekends probably 3-4 hours a day spread between am and pm if I haven't got other commitments that I need to rush off for.

Not much difference in the winter really and hour each morning, plus another hour if I ride before work. 30 mins to an hour in the evening on non riding days and 2 hours in the evening on riding days. 3-4+ hours at the weekend. Quite a lot of time really, though I wish I could spend more time there...

Last night I spent about 3 hours sitting on a stool while my lad trimmed down the grass around the stable block.
Absolute heaven!

Most nights I get there about 5 and leave about 7 if I don't ride, 9pm if I do. Weekends.... as long as I feel like :)
