We are thinking of breeding from my mare in the spring, but would like an honest idea of cost! I am thinking AI because hopefully gives more choice?? What have people found works for them as well? I obviously know you cant plan for emergency vet call outs etc so I am just talking basic costs such as swabbing etc. I am expecting it to be in the 1000's and that it is probably cheaper to buy a foal, but that isnt the reason we would like to do it!! She is a small 15.2 full TB with a great jump and good paces- I am looking for an all rounder. Have met some really lovely cheeky CB's in my time so wondering about them... Want something with a bit more bone and not quite as sharp! Thanking you in advance

From my own experience, the AVERAGE price for semen is around £500, some costs more, some less.

You will have to consider whether you are sending your mare to stud for AI or to a vets. Keep costs apply to both, these vary from stud to stud and whether your mare is at grass or stabled and how long she is there.

Any extra drugs will be charged or for cleaning out (my last brood mare did not naturally cleanse and had to have this done for her).

You will also have to consider the cost of either transporting your horse to stud/vets and the delivery cost of the semen (if that applies).

Most studs/vets have packages. Also bear in mind that some charge VAT on top!

It is not a cheap option and there are no guarantees that it will work but it is extremely rewarding. One year our mare had three attempts via frozen semen and did not take yet the following year we tried her with frozen from a different stallion and she took first time. It's a gamble.

I can did out an old invoice to let you know how much everything cost via our vet if you would like but this won't be until tomorrow. x

mine cost me £500 for semen . mare took 1st time vet fixed price £375, but we had a couple of wash outs and the herpes vaccine so at the moment am up to about £1200, but the foal when born to will be priceless to me.
