I work as a freelance groom/rider, and someone has enquirer about moving to the yard I keep my horses at. It's a pure DIY yard (not mine) and she asked if I could provide her with part/full livery service.

I'm definately interested in this as I'm there twice a day anyway and have the time to care for another horse.

But I'm not sure how much to charge? She would be paying YO £25 a week for diy livery and need to supply her own feed/hay/bedding.

I'm not entirely sure exactly what 'services' she wants, will be speaking to her later but wanted to have an idea of price in my head.

So maybe ideas for 3 scenarios?

1. Basic care I.e feed, turnout, muck out , bring in, change rug and feed.
2. As above but daily full groom
3. As above + exercise?

I'm thinking would probably be better to charge separately for exercise as I don't think it would be a daily thing.

I normally charge £15 for the first hour and £10 thereafter, but I obviously won't be travelling out of my way to do her horse as will be there doing mine anyway.

Have spoken to YOnand she's for me to do this btw. I'm also in west Berkshire.

We pay £10 for 1
I think its then £15-20 for riding schooling per hour

Might be worth suggesting a plan like only grooming when you ride and ride 3 times a week?

Have that figure in your head and then she will think you are not trying to rip her off and you get extra ££'s for the riding ;-)

Usually I would include picking out feet and essential grooming in basic care, such as washing off muddy legs. I charge £19 for ridden schooling and £17 for lunging, but these prices are quite high because I am very limited to how many I can do in a day as well as all the daily care and mucking out, turnout etc for 7 horses. Day to day labour (caring for the essential needs) works out at approximately £250 per horse per month. The rest of the livery is actual cost of feed, bedding etc. I charge quite a lot for clipping and tack cleaning too. Again so that I only have a manageable amount of it to do. If I had more time, I would charge less.

We pay £12 for someone to come up, turn horses out, muck out and leave stables ready for that evening. Thats for two horses. We were recently quoted £6/horse for option one by a freelance groom. To have horses ridden is usually about £10-12/hour.

Previously we had a groom who charged £12/hr including all her insurance etc.
