As the post says how much to feed a laminitic pony on box rest.
At the moment she is having lucie stalks in the morning with supplements.
One section oversoaked hay at lunch time.
Lucie stalks and supplements in the afternoon.
One section of oversoaked hay at bed time.
Should I be feeding her more.
She is a 14.1hh Highland mare not overweight

is she on box rest because of laminitis or because of something else as that makes a difference. When Eeyore had laminitis vet told me to stop all feed and just give him 2 sections of hay spread over 24 hours - I was slated for 'starving' him but he was never without hay as he never finished his net, I also gave him a small amount of speedibeet and alpha lite on a morning to get his bute down him. If she isn't in a lami attack at the moment then you could probably allow another section of soaked hay but if she isnt 'starving' you may prefer not to (I personally probably wouldn't if she is ok on what she is getting). Not sure if that helps or not really!

well my little pony 12.1 whos is in good condidtion weight wise, has three secsions of over soaked rinsed off hay a day this will last her all day and night so basically feeding it ad-lib.

and she has round scoop of hifi lite morning and night with supplements and a cupful of speedibeet between dinner and break she is in at the moment as lami attack again but she is a cushings pony she doesnt go on grass she goes in bark paddock so i give her two secsions in there and one back in her stable and what ever she has left over from day!
.

i would just let pony have ad lib hay surely 2 secsions of hay threw the day and night dont last him anytime

my vet told me to feed Happy Hoof, as much as she can eat. apparently its fine as its lami trust approved. I give her a tub in the morning and it last longer than a hay net would. I also give her a ball with High fibre cubes in (also lami trust approved) to kick around during the day and another big tub of Happy Hoof at night. I probably go through a bag ever 4 or 5 days once its puffed out in the tub.

Consider thrashed rye grass as an ad lib feed as there is little food value and horses seem to love it. Be careful about the laminitis trust logo, I am sure that just because a feed manufacturer has paid for the priviledge of its endorsement that doesn't mean it can be fed ad lib with no ill effect.
Consider using belladonna 30c homeopathic remedy. I have used it for years and previously laminitic ponies (correctly managed) have not have a another bout.

Don't forget vits and mins, they are very important for healthy hoof growth and healing. Complete feeds, like Happy Hoof have vits and mins and will meet your pony needs if fed according to instructions. Otherwise, I'd feed a balancer with a low calorie chaff alongside your carefully controlled amount of hay.

[/ QUOTE ] I'd just like to clarify your comment about Laminitis Trust approved feeds - although companies do pay to join this scheme, their feeds are not accepted unless they meet the correct standards:

I used to use Happy Hoof as a total hay replacer for a laminitic pony with dental problems and I must say it worked well for her, as she could not eat hay or haylage. However, it works out extremely expensive in comparison to hay, so for a normal laminitic I would substitute well-soaked hay, rather than line the pockets of the feed companies!

I have never been convinced by the theory that they eat short chop more slowly than hay. In my experience they eat short chop in a tub more quickly than hay in a small hole net!

I'm interested in your comment about thrashed rye grass - have you any more info on this? Rye grass tends to quite high in fructans which are a no-no for laminitics, although if cut late the fructans are reduced.

My 13.2hh is on box rest currently and she has 4 sections of hay soaked for between 12 and 24 hours over a 24 hour period and a small handful of Happy Hoof when the others are fed. This was agreed with by my vet as two sections on wet hay a day just wasn't enough to keep her occupied and she was becoming very stressed.
