My daughter's horse has been lame on and off for some time, and a friend offered the use of her homebred, home produced mare which hasn't done much. Daughter tried her a few times at PC and wasn't sure she really liked her, but beggars can't be choosers and after several abortive trips to see various 'not as described' not to mention downright donkeys for sale, we took the mare to Area sj.

It just goes to show you can't tell what a horse will be like until you put it to the test - they had the only double clear in the competition, and now daughter is off to the championships!!

But what should I offer my friend for use of the mare until we find our own? I know she would appreciate money and I have offered to pay for shoes etc, but would say £100 a month be enough? She is kept at home and is cheap to keep, but it's the principle - I want to pay the going rate for a share in a decent horse.

It probably depends on the loan agreement and what aspects of her care you will be liable for bills for. If you pay for the usual costs like shoes / jabs / wormer then I wouldn't be expecting to pay extra, but if the owner covers these costs and also houses the mare then I would expect to pay towards this. You will need to sort out your own insurance too. What is the going rate around you? If the mare is green and you are in effect helping to bring her on then that tends to make the going rate a bit less. £100 sounds a good amount and I like Kitsunes idea of a pic - a nice thoughtful gift too aswell as helping out with £.

I'm sure they would like that, a proud owner would no doubt like to show their homebred mare out being brilliant to their friends and family :)

And we want pics too of course!!
