hi

i am going to view a horse tomorrow, 4 yr old, broken in 2 month ago, can w/t/c and been hacked out, asking price is 1295 is priced to sell. no tack included

how much would you start as your offer?

never negotiated on price before (always been through someone else)

thanks!

1000, they'll probably say no, I would expect to settle at 1150-1200 just for bargaining sake.

If I really, really, wanted the horse I'd give them the asking price. I never actually go to see a horse without the full asking price, in cash, in my pocket, just in case it is one I absolutely don't want to get away. On the other hand, if I am not that bothered, and they won't go 250 less I've walked away, sometimes they shrug and wait for the next person, sometimes they'll take my offer.

Agree with this.

You could say your budget has to also buy tack so would they consider £1000 - £1100.

Good luck :)

Totally agree ^^^ I think it's cheap enough, and if we were selling one at that price ( which we are ) and someone made a bid we'd tell them not to bother looking ( which we have ) If it's a sound horse, that has his / her whole life ahead, with no medical problems, and it's been started, surely it's worth £1500 of anyones money?? :D

xx

I have to agree with some of the replys if it was my horse and it is clearly a nice healthy horse who's just started out I would defently want the asking price nothing lower

I thought it sounded a fair price if that is what you are after.

My horse was priced 1200 including tack and even though she turned out to be 2 years older than advertised (16 instead of 14), it was still a fair price and we did not try to knock them down. I am sure they probably would have accepted less, but she was well worth the asking price.

i probably wouldn't haggle on the price- the horses i've bought have always been well priced and i have just bought them for the asking price... probably silly but i've really wanted them and they were pretty cheap anyways :)

It sounds like a very fair price and I'd just offer the full price, if it was professionally broken in it would of cost around £600 and they'll cetainly be selling at a loss, I wouldn't push it..

People always leave room to haggle its a buyers market .If the horse is right for you , start at £900 -£1,000 go for £1100 be very hesitent ! Good luck !P.S if horse has been pro broken, dont be shy to ask who and when and try and find out about them some horses are advertised as pro broke and some sellers cant name them or they are unherd of i know one horse which was pro broke at four yo, left in a field a year and a novice rode it round the field in walk and trot for six months with its nose in the air and not hacked out it was then advertised as a professionally broken but turned away for a year......

Which in essence it was!

id start at 900 if they are adament on price maybe negotiate the bridle and rugs ?
in essence 1300 is not cheap at this time of year or this market 600 is cheap
your tack and rugs could bump it up to 1800/2000
so def not cheap

We bought a bargain pony at Easter. I didn't even think of negotiating as wanted the deal done and dusted before someone else snapped him up. So it depends on how much you like it I suppose!

I wouldn't make an offer at first. I'd ask the price again, 'You said you wanted £1200 for her' in a rather doubtful voice., If the seller responds with 'make me an offer, we need to sell her' then I'd start at £900. If they say 'yes that's right' I'd either say 'would you take £1100?' or try to negotiate tack for the price or very little more. If you don't ask, you don't get. Always supposing you like the horse after you've tried it.

My horse was advertised for £1300, I offered £1000 and they said the lowest they would accept was £1100, which was what I had already decided to go to anyway.

If you like the horse you can always give the asking price if they won't budge.

I have just bought a sec d mare - she was advertised for £1250 - I haggled with price and got her £850! id try your luck, always good to save a penny!!
