How much will I be expected to pay a freelance groom for the following:

Morning turn out, muck out, hay and water.
Afternoon bring in and feed.

I will need this doing every day for 12 days. They will have to travel to the yard but I am hoping to get someone fairly local.

How much should I offer if they don't have a set price and how much do you think people would charge for this? I have no idea!! Thank you 😄

I paid for this while I had a few days on holiday. One horse. £10 a day. The person was very local (over the road), and our horse and yard were easy to deal with.

TBH I would have paid more, to rest easy with my horse in someone else's charge is priceless. £5 a visit is what I have paid for any odd visit, even if it is just to collect from the field and chuck in a stable.

I keep two horses at home. When away my freelancer does more or less what you are wanting, with the exception of filling hay steamer and topping up steamer water (it's on a timer). She doesn't need to do waters as stables and field drinkers are automatic. She also poo picks the field from daytime use. She charges £10 for each visit ie £20 a day for morning and evening. Well worth it in my opinion as also provides a 'presence' twice a day at my house (stables next to house) so peace of mind in that way too. She's excellent, so trustworthy, I know they're in good hands.
She travels from four miles away.

I would say not less than £20 per day .
Unless the groom is travelling a far way in which case I would expect to pay for travel costs as well .

wish i had worked for generous people like you when i was freelancing, one family paid me £5ph no matter what was done in that hour and didnt pay travel either, yet would charge liveries £5 to turn the horse in/out!

i'd be happy to pay £10 per day for my horse who is on grass, poo pick paddock, give feed and check over, water is automatic field is shared with friend so would only need to go once and it would probably only take a half hour:)

TBH I use freelancers all the time .
I pay them well they get flexibility and I get hours when I need them .
There's no way they could afford to work for £ 5 per hour for an hours work by they time they took off their overheads they would be working for almost nothing .
Transport is now a significant issue for freelancers .

We are on DIY and if we occasionally need the YO to do full care she charges £10 per horse per day IIRC. All as above, plus poo picking. She lives on site, so no travelling.

I used to charge £10 for morning duties as you describe, including poo picking, and £5 for the afternoon. That was for 1 horse and a Shetland, and I wasn't travelling very far. I know others who charge between £6.50 and £10 per hour.

I have just been using freelance staff to cover full timers and have paid £10 per hour for a block of no less than 4 hours at a time. Seems that is the current rate but expect to pay travel time and expenses if you are only wanting an odd hour or so at any one time.

Agree. I am a free lance groom. I wont work for less than £8 an hr. If I have to travel further then its ten pounds per hour. Petrol is so expensive now. It's a big responsibility and in some cases dangerous when dealing with horses as they are unpredictable. What makes me cross is that some owners want to pay peanuts, usually less min wage for an adult. You pay for what you get and I offer 5☆ service, am reliable, trust worthy, have horses of my own and can provide references.

We agreed £ 6.00 per visit, but as some days needed less or more, I just asked her how much I owed her at end of a week, obviously I knew boy was checked properly every day and if he needed an extra check he got it, it was all flexible, she rode him if she had time, to be honest this was a bonus for her, I told her to make sure his stable was properly mucked out as I am very particular and the stable was not easy to keep clean.
I visited most days, but not every day.

Agree with you, my groom was running a business, so had dogs to walk etc, she was passing my stables 2 to 4 times per day, so I let her choose exactly when she visited, as long as he was looked after properly, and I knew what was happening.
I am self employed, and no work is under £9.00 per hour on site.

I currently pay £15 per day to my next door YO to come over to do my 2 (tho one is only 33ins tall) when we go on annual holiday and poss the odd day at xmas time.
They could be putting in or out, will need moving twice a day anyway, TF will need muzzle coming off/on. Both get a token feed twice a day, poo picking or mucking out gets done. (Currently its TF thats in during the day, so she is just skipped out).

As CF is trying to keep fit, I'm also hefting out for him to be ridden most days when we go on hols in a weeks time!

As a gardener, I have to run a van and buy tools, which is £500 per annum in addition to transport, for one off, worse case is £16.50 per hour, best case for regulars is £9.00

I'm a freelance groom/animal carer and I charge £10 an hour, like others have said, fuel is so expensive and if I'm very busy (up to 25 horses a day) I can easily spend £80 in fuel in one week. I'm also insured so that's more expense and I wouldn't make any money if I charged anything less. Though I don't tend to charge fuel rates unless its over 10 miles away.

I usually pay £10 to muck out etc am, and £5 to bring in pm (for two horses) however have just been quoted£15/hr by lady that is doing them while I'm away. I'm a bit gutted, I only changed to her this time as she was saying she was skint. It will cost me more than it would for them to go on full livery, and yet I'm obviously buying hay/straw/feed/elec too. I won't be using. Her again.
