As you may or may not know I am taking on a 32 year old mare as a companion to my pony. Atm she is fit as a flea with less problems than my 14 year old

as I'm not insuring her (obvs) I want to put some money away so when the time comes it's one less thing to worry about and the money is there.
I know it could be another 10 years but it will give me peace of mind to know how much it costs.
So how much is it for injection?

And yes I have thought about shooting but I have decided that if it was an old horse I would go by injection
Thanks

It cost me £150 to have my mare pts a few weeks back plus call out fee aswell.

I hope you still get many good years out of your mare before the time comes.

You also need to consider the cost of removing the body...very morbid post! But I know when my friend had her horsey pts it came to about 500 including cremating him....

anything from £200 to £500 depending on if you have the vet out/ then recovery then ashes done, or if you just have the vet and then the body disposed of, or if you just have the knackerman to come out and do it then dispose of the body...all varies depends on what you want.

Morbid I know, but I thinks its good to talk about it actually.

yes good planning to think ahead and less of a shock when it happens. Cremation tends to be cheaper if you are happy for your horse to be cremated with others - it depends if you wanted your horses ashes back or not. Also, double check your vet will inject as that is your wish - some practises have very clear ideas on how they PTS and it may not be in line with your wishes.

I'd estimate a good couple of hundred as you will need to pay for vets call out and time, drugs, and removal and disposal of body (which your vet should organise).

It cost me £350 in march to get my boy picked up and cremated, no idea on how much the injection is as he died of a heartattack

A very morbid post, but also very interesting and useful. I have a 29 yo pony and have just got my insurance renewal through and am thinking of cancelling hers (injury/PLiab only) and just putting a bit away to cover her when the time comes

. Although knowing my luck she'll sever a leg in the field the next day and I'll end up shelling out hundreds to get her stitched up!!

Thanks alot, it seems to range between £150 - £500 so think I will try and put the full £500 away then I get some choices at the time.

Sorry about the morbid post, I had to ask. I've never had to think about it before and you just can ask someone at the yard who's lost their beloved pet the very matter of fact question of 'how much'?!

It cost me about £500 and I had a shared cremation, that inc vet. My total bill was much more than that though as she had colic (didnt pts just because of colic, more complicated than that, just in case anyone thinks omg) Im only mentioning this as often its not just pts costs but some illness leading up to it.

Call me daft, but if you've got death, injury and vet etc on your insurance does that cover pts costs? Id assumed it didnt but is that me just being thick?

Brummyrat - she's 32 so not insured, my 14 year old is fully insured for all those things so if (god forbid) anything happened to her the insurence would cover it

This is interesting. We had one pts yesterday at the yard unfortunately. It got me thinking though of the costs involved. What do people normally do and the costs involved. Cremation you obviously need to pay for. What if you decide to give the body to the hunt? Is this free? What about the zoo? Do people do that? and what other options are there? Just lots of questions freshly going around in my head. Sorry.

I was just going to ask that as I've heard various 'tales' about prices. I've one in his twenties and though no doubt he has years ahead of him I like to know what to expect. I had hoped to use the local kennels.

I dont think I could bare the thought of going to the hunt, although I have read that the hunt can do it for you and take away the body for about £120. I think it's quite sensible just not for me.

It is a very individual choice and you do what you want and what makes it easier for you at the time I think.
I can't really see my horse buried under a tree or sitting in a box on my mantlepiece but I might change my mind when I am put in that situation. As it stands at the moment, I would be fine to go to the hunt or zoo or something. I feel it is keeping a life going by one that is lost. Nature and all that. As I say, I might and probably will feel differently when I am in this situation.

I paid £80 (PTS by vet at yard by the gun, thou wasnt charged for his sedation ), and i paid approx £460 for the crem to take and cremate him in a group.

Think the hunt where i live is about £100.00.

I have a bill here in front of me from December - euthanase £78.49, collection & disposal (group cremation) was £333.50. There was no call out charge here as we were at the vets. Brummy, I'll let you know how it stands, insured for vets fees and death, but death is only on humane grounds (something like a broken leg), and strongly suspect the pts part of the bill won't be covered under the vets fees - I posted about this earlier in the vets section and haven't had settlement from the insurer yet

I don't think this is morbid at all - it's something everyone should think about and be prepared for, especially if you have an older pony, and you're right not to leave it until a time when you are forced into making a quick decision which you may regret later.

I had my old gelding put down 5 yrs ago. I paid £350 for the people to come out (I think they were about 50 miles away), shoot him at home, take him away, individual cremation and return of the ashes. I thought that was good at the time, don't know how much it would be now.

Unfortunately over the years I have lost a few horses. Two were PTS at the Royal Vet College and group cremated there - this worked out more expensive than the two that were PTS at home by my vet and collected and group cremated. I think I paid about £120 for the vet and £250 for cremation. I was quoted £600 for individual cremation but could not afford that.

As has already been mentioned, insurance will ONLY pay out if there is an immediate and undeniable reason to have the horse PTS rather than it being a quality of life decision.

It depends how you get her done
A) Injection by vet you would have to pay vet cost and injection cost , then to have it disposed you would have to have her cremated cost can be upto £200
B) Shot by local hunt if you deliver her its about £80 if can be fed to hounds, £100 if hunt picks her up alive or dead and fed to hounds.

Remember it's now illegal to bury animals they must be disposed of properly. (someone else may correct me if I'm wrong but am sure thats the case)

I don't think they are allowed to be fed to the hounds any more. Something to do with DEFRA I believe. They incincerate the bodies.

when I had my PTS it was £400 all told since we were at the vets, however, even though I was covered for death, the insurance refused to pay out since the conditition was treatable through operation. I PTS due to quality of life as we had other issues.

If you want the ashes and to know they're your own horse, you'd have to have him/her cremated on their own so look to pay in region of £800-£1000 otherwise you'd have every Tom, Dick and Harriet on your mantlepiece.

Local Hunt is another option - ours in Hampshire is £250 to shoot and remove.

Local abbatoir is another option - they will come and shoot, remove and pay you per kilo but must be for human consumption. Very morbid indeed!

Martins and Son in Essex charge £175 to come out and shoot at home then remove as long as they haven't had any drugs - I believe they supply greyhound kennels with fresh meat and also the dog food manufacturers.

It's about £350 for a horse whose body can't be used, that includes a group cremation.

£500 + for return of ashes in a casket.

It worked out about £400 for me. Had horse pts by injection (£180) then £200 to collect and cremate by a hunt.

Insurance companies allow about £500 so if you put that away that should cover it unless you are unlucky. I have oldies insured for accidents and subsequent pts and disposal.

The insurance is pretty small so may be worth looking into as you will still need public liability unless you have it already.
