How much would people expect to pay to have a horse sedated? we just had autumn sedated to pull her mane as she hates it. my friend who is a vet nurse said to expect about 20 quid. my vet bill has just coe and they have charged me 87 and thats without call out!? somethings not right there surely? ight have to give them a call to sort it out

I'd say somewhere between £60-£70, including call out fee which is approx £30 at my local vets. That seems a bit steep if it doesn't even include call out. I'd say £20 was way off the mark though. I wish it was that cheap.

My latest vet bill (29/12/09) includes sedation to have an abscess drained. It was 32.37 for the visit, 24.51 for examination and advice, and then there are two drugs billed...Domidine at 8.61 and Dolorex at 7.76. So 73.25 in all, including 15% VAT. I guess maybe your horse was more heavily sedated, but the drugs themselves seem relatively inexpensive...I think I would query your bill!

I can't imagine many vets sedating a horse for £20, all our local vets charge at least £35 call out. Perhaps your friend meant if you take the horse to the vet and so there was no call out? £87 without call out does sound way over the top though. I would have thought around £60-70 as Blaise said.

depends on what vet sedated with! dom torb and acp combination is quite pricy but works well. sedivet per ml is comparitively cheap but not as reliable(in my opinion and makes them sweat) plus call out plus examination plus injection fee! it all adds up far too quickly! seems an excessive expense to pull a mane though! i would try to time this with teeth or vaccines or when vet is due for something else! have you tried a twitch and a hot sweaty horse?(and a speedy puller!!) hogging?

Ours is ~£70 including call out (more if more then 20miles away id say).
Also may vary depending on whether its sedation for a veterinary procedure(often cheaper) or for a non-vet procedure.
Also depends on how much sedation they require.

For I V doping with Domosedan and Torbajesic with call out is easiley £100, the stuff itself is very expensive, but the best, I have a clipping client whos horse is sedated with this stuff and I clipp it and the man is pulled at the same time, i dont worry about sweat i just keep clipping. And a twitch would even get you near to even combing this horses mane.

87 pounds was just for the drugs themselves!!! the call out is on top (but we shared with three other people) what I meant when I said 20 pounds is that my friend (who does the finance accounts at another vets!!) said that what the drugs should come to roughly.

as for the mane advice.......you cant even comb her mane normally let alone anything else! ses a dream to handle just very very touchy about her mane. being irish its thick and i needed it thinning out so it can be plaited so that really rules out a rake (dont look good) and hogging is simply out of the question!

all is fine now but with my bill coming to 100 quid it was a bit of a shock!
