my friend who has an all-weather arena has been asked by another rider if they can use the school regularly for their horses. they have said that they will pay for this use, and my friend really needs to know what she should charge for one hour sessions in the school, any ideas?

TBH if it is an on going thing, she would be better to charge a monthly one off payment, such as £40.00 per month paid in advance each month, otherwise it gets to expensive for the other party, at that you are getting a regular amount which is affordable. This is what i have always done.

Highcross Equestrian charge £20 per hour rental for one horse + £10 per additional horse. I think that arena is quite large though. Some charge less, some more, it depends on the size of arena & if it includes jumps etc.

Renting out your facilities is fine for a bit of extra income however do not let the council know or they may consider you are a business & change your 'rates'. You may also have to consider insurance implications of others using the school.

thanks daisychain, that is a really good idea as she has only thought about it in £ per session, makes a lot more sense to do it in bulk! if they have 2 one-hour sessions per week, do you think that £40 per month is a good price?

We charge £10 an hour for flat providing they come when we are not using the school. It would be more if they were using the jumps or if we had to stop so they could use it.

thankyou Toby_Zaphod, i hope that as the rider in question is a good friends of hers there wont be too much problem with the council as she will be the only person who is paying for the use of the school, will check that with her though! arena does include jumps so that may up the price a little i guess.

Well unless she is a proper business as such, im sure a nice cash amount would be better at least then its regular, when people pay a more normal amount they dont use it as regularly as it becomes to expensive. I have paid £40 a month and prob used school 2/3 times a week.

That sounds quite cheap. How many times will she be using it and for how many horses? For a monthly / weekly charge I would base it on £5 - £10 per horse per hour of use, depending on whether this is shared or sole use.

Gosh, my mum has stables at home, which are meant for ponies. The school isnt massive but ideal for up to 14.2 for jumping and so on. We used to let one or two people use it for free as long as they poo picked!

The school I use once a week or so charges £5 per half hour, or £8 per hour. I use the jumps for no extra charge if I put them up and they have never had any problem with this.

I was thinking about asking to pay a nominal monthly amount instead as would make it easier I think, and then I might get some 'free' time. As maybe wouldn't go up much more, but I would prob offer to pay £20 per month to use it for half hour or so periods once, occasionally twice a week. Can't manage more than half an hour schooling at once
