I am the second week into bringing me and my horse back into work after a 6 month break because I injured my back. I have to take things easy because it is not particularly strong at the moment and during the break my horse got an abcess in his foot and a touch of lami for the first time ever.
So we have started walking work (all road work as no school or off road hacking) and I want to take it easy with him and make sure he is not rushed. I was thinking of walking him for 4 weeks before introducing trot.
We are currently walking a 2 mile loop and can increase it to a 3 mile loop soon. Does this sound like enough walking work or should I do a bit more before introducing trot?
He was pretty fit before doing pleasure rides every week and 20 miles road work in the week. The routes are hilly too.

that sounds about right to me... i'd be doing about an hour of walk daily before introducing trotwork, and then only trotting on the verge, or uphill on tarmac for no more than a few minutes at a time.
4 weeks of walking is perfect, but most people get bored after 2 weeks and start looking to have a bit of fun instead...

it sounds right to me, as long as you introduce the trot gradually and listen to what your horse if telling you I would have thought you should be fine, I'd do at least four weeks of trot before you reintroduce canter
